Standards and Type Approval unit
Type Approval • Kenya Communication Regulations (Type
approval, importation and distribution of
electronic communications equipment)
2010
– Issuance of conformance certificate:
confirmation that equipment has undergone
type approval evaluation process and conforms
to the relevant national and international
standards and as a result has been approved for
use in Kenya
– 45 days within which the Authority shall evaluate
and communicate its decision to the applicant

• Process of determining conformity to
national and international standards
• Why?
– To ensure interoperability with existing networks
– Avoid frequency interference
Type Approval
• Type approval application:
– Letter of agency from manufacturer or
principal distributor
– Sample (if necessary)
• In a good working condition
• Properly configured for testing and complete with the
necessary test adapters &accessories and
• Clearly marked with the trade name, model and
serial/IMEI number
Type Approval
– Technical manuals (Operation,
programming, specifications) in English
– User manuals in English
– Certified copies of
• Conformance certificates from a regulatory
authority or accredited laboratory
• Test reports and results (RF, EMC & Safety) from
manufacturers or accredited testing
laboratories, in English, duly signed and
stamped
Type Approval • Provisional type approval granted for a trial
period of 6 (six) months
• Equipment should not become a health,
environmental or a safety hazard
• Modifications not allowed
• Minimum warranty of 12 months
• Maintain adequate spares for replacement
• Equipment should not cause harmful
interference to other radio communication
systems
Certification
Certification of installations to ensure
compliance to:
• Guidelines for supply, installation and maintenance
of internal communication infrastructure
• Guidelines for Supply, Installation and Maintenance
of External Communication Infrastructure
• Relevant International standards
Certification
Licensees should exhibit high standards of
professionalism and good practice to:
• protect the safety of persons and property;
• Minimize interference with
– the operations of a public utility,
– public roads and paths,
– the movement of traffic, and
– the use of land
• protect the environment
Certification
• Commencement of Work Notice
– facility operator plan their systems to
accommodate increased demand and take
stock of new installations on their network
• Completion of Work Notice
– allow networks to plan their networks and inspect
the installation and protect its network against
harmful installations
Certification
• Annual and adhoc inspection of electronic
communication system or equipment and
wiring at reasonable times:
– ensure adherence to the installation guidelines
and regulation.
– Ascertain that the installed equipment is Type
Approved
