empathy for the context of a problem to investigate both the unknown and ambiguous aspects of the current situation,

creativity in the iterative generation of insights and alternative paths, redefining the original problem, and

rationality in analyzing and fitting various solutions to the problem context

Case study (California): Get kids to eat better lunch. The solution is all about the food, right?ttp://www.ideo.com/stories/a-cafeteria-designed-for-me/

The 1st solution … hire a caterer that serves some of the highest nutritional meals in the nation.

The outcome …when the lunch bell rang, many students weren’t showing up.

The real problem … wasn’t so much about the food itself, but rather about how it was being served—the design of the lunch experience.

“aha moment” … In a world in which students are used to expressing their opinions on social media, they had no voice in shaping their food experience.

Traditionally design was an afterthought tied to packaging an idea, this has changed to design being at the core.
