Nanotechnology In Empowering Military Applications
PRESENTED BY: P.SELVAPRIYA R.SOUNDHARYA
ABSTRACT
Positional control is fundamental to most manufacturing processes as well as a wide range of other applications.
Many types of positional devices have been proposed and used, ranging from robotics arms to Stewart platforms.
This paper discusses about the usage of nanotechnology in military field and implementing the concepts of Nano robotics in the battle field
Nano technology is a rapidly growing era in this decade including how it could enhance national security, making the soldier more effective in the battle field.
INTRODUCTION
The term “nanotechnology” has evolved over the years via terminology drift to mean “anything smaller than micro technology”.
It can be distinguished into i. New science and technology that takes
the advantage of properties in Nano scaleii. Building with atomic precision through
the use of molecular machine
POTENTIAL MILITARY APPLICATIONS
In battle management and strategy planning new levels of artificial intelligence would be used :“DARPA” aims to cognitive computer system that learn and decide autonomously in new situations
Nanofibre composites that allow stronger more heat resistant but much lighter materials for structures and engines
Surface covering displays may be used for user interface
SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY
It does not promote an increase in waste produces released into the environment
It does not physically degrade the environment
It meets human needs worldwide
IMPORTANT MILLITARY APPLICATIONS
Nano technology could be used to create new materials for use in a variety of combat environment.
For examples:Individual molecules could be manipulated to change their orientation when exposed to magnetic field or electrical current from I. Brittle to bullet proof II. Porous to water repellentIII. Insulating to conducting
The important military applications of nano technology that are discussed in this paper are :
I. Nano – uniformsII. Nano – roboticsIII. Nano –helmetsIV. Nano –bombs
NANO UNIFORM Imagine a futuristic battle field where the
soldiers uniform are as light as paper that resist bullets, regulate their body temperature, enhance their strength and detect chemical and biological poisons
The uniform materials are made rigid to recycle water from a soldiers body to create intelligent fabric by weaving computer and communication technology into a uniform
i. Instant armorii. Nano sensingiii. Nano wires and Nano assemblyiv. Carbon Nano fiber technology
NANO HELMET
The soldiers would be networked to tactical command through helmets to provide an “augmented reality” overlaid with information and instruction
It also indicates the current position of the soldiers o military head quarters
NANO ALUMINIUM Aluminum alloys with high mg₂si-content(22-35 wt.-%) offer the possibility of significant decrease in density and increase in stiffness even at elevated temperatures at same time
NANO BOMBS Nano technology has a new class of weaponry that
uses energy packed Nano metals to create powerful compact bombs
The field of Nano energies which enables building more lethal weapons such as “grenades” that have several times the detonation force of conventional bombs “daisy cutter”
The power of the weapons can be increased by adding material known as super thermites that combine Nano metals such as Nano aluminum with metal oxides
Super thermites can increase the reaction time by a thousand times
NANO ROBOTICS The Nano robotics can overcome the difficulties
faced by the human involved in military actions The loss of lives of soldiers can be minimized by
using nano robotics The accuracy, efficiency and reliability is greatly
high in nano robotics A little bit of strengthening greatly reduced the
risk of failure
MORE MILITARY APPLICATIONS Information dominance through advanced nano
electronics More sophisticated virtual reality systems Increased use of enhanced automation and
robotics Required improvements in
chemical/biological/nuclear sensing Design improvements in systems used for nuclear
non proliferation monitoring and management Combined Nano chemical and micro mechanical
devices for control of nuclear defense systems
FUTURE IMPLEMENTATION Change colors on command to camouflage in
changing environments even manipulate light to make soldiers invisible in the field
Change a shirtsleeve into a splint or a pant leg into a rigid cast in the field if a soldier is injured
Provide impact protection materials and systems including ballistic and shrapnel
Provide chemical and biological protection materials and systems
Weave radio communications materials directly into the uniforms fabric providing soldiers flexibility and lighter loads
CONCLUSION Nano technology combines the requirements in
increasing level of regulation and monitoring, not only within states but also in whole world
The threads posed by the powerful nanotechnology could work as a catalyst to strengthen the society at the international level, permitting reliance on the national armed forces and preparation for war is to be reduced step by step.
