The efficiency of a fire place can be measures with the help of good fire wood. A good fire place wood is seasoned and dried

well before it is cut into fire wood. The process of preparing for firewood starts in the summer months itself. Fire wood dealers start chopping wood in summers and dry them out extensively. The reason they dry it out before cutting is fresh cut fire wood contains water. The water has to be dried thoroughly before

being cut and split. Semi dried fire wood does not burn completely and it stays hot for a longer period of time. This

can become a fire hazard and unsafe for your house.

HOW TO GET THE MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY OUT OF YOUR FIRE PLACE?

Unseasoned firewood can start building soot in your chimney. Clogged chimneys are dangerous to use over a period of time. In order to increase your fire place’s efficiency use seasoned firewood. Seasoned wood will burn hotter even with a less amount of it and also gives out less smoke. Also use some additional equipment like fire back. A fire back is a piece of large metal that is placed behind the andiron with fire wood. The metal gets heated up while burning fire wood and gives out the heat to be circulated in the house. Use a good stainless steel fire back to reflect heat back.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE SEASONED FIREWOOD?

Nobody can tell the difference between well seasoned and unseasoned firewood unless you are an expert. Most of the firewood looks dry and hard. However there are some classic signs that you can look for in order to recognize well seasoned firewood. Good quality fire wood is darker in appearance and is grayer compared to fresh wood. Take two blocks of chopped wood and knock them together and it will make a clanking sound. When knocked upon seasoned fire wood develops cracks. The dark park on seasoned fire wood will seem to be chipping and will come of easily when you try.

INSTALL DAMPERS

Use a good top sealed damper in order to save money and heat. Even fire wood is very expensive if you tend to use the fire place on the higher side. A damper will help you save and energy when the fire place is not being used. A fire place continues to burn fire wood several hours after you put it off. It keeps simmering for a long time and exhausts the fire wood supplies. A damper will put of the fire wood immediately when you want to stop using the fire place. Dampers are available in materials like aluminum and silicone that can take high temperatures. They form an air tight seal to extinguish the fire. When you invest in a damper you can recover the money you spent on it through energy savings and firewood costs.

Using firewood is definitely a cheaper option than using heating option. It is even cheaper than gas heating or any other options.
