As the protagonist in my film is a female, I shall write about the representation of women in films, and whether I have added to the stereotypical conventions.

One way in which a stereotype of females is found within my film is that her appearance is the main topic of the text messages she receives. One says “You look pretty tonight”, making it seem as if the antagonist has an interest in how she looks.

A second way in which a stereotype of females is found within my film is that she is perceived as weak and unable to help herself when she receives the second threatening text message.

However, my film does not conform to the stereotype that girls are scared by many things, due to the fact that the main female character does not appear to be fazed by the first text message she receives.

Representation of Teenagers Teenagers are presented stereotypically in my film. One

way in which they are presented stereotypically is through the fact that the main character keeps going on her mobile phone. Being a prop commonly associated with teenagers in modern society, this is one way in which I have conformed to using the stereotype of a teenager. The costume worn by the protagonists are not stereotypically worn by teenagers, they are simply civilian ware. The environment is quite stereotypical for a teenager to be in, for it is outside late at night

It is important for there to be some stereotypical representations of teenagers in this film, due to the fact that the audience need to be sure that everything else in my film is normal and make it as realistic as possible.

Have My Representations of Gender Been Positive or Negative?

The stereotypes of gender/females that are present in my film opening are mainly negative, due to the fact that these stereotypes tend not to be true representations of this social group. Such stereotypes include a main focus of her being her appearance (as stated by the text message telling her she looks pretty).

However, the fact that the main character of my film is female, and did not appear to be scared by the threat behind the text message until it became dangerous indicates that this character does not conform to all the stereotypes found in females, specifically in horror films.

Have My Representations of Teenagers Been Positive or Negative?

The representation of teenagers in my film opening has been negative due to the fact that they portray teenagers in a stereotypical way, such as as unsocial and being constantly on their phone.

However, I have also challenged the stereotypes by showing the main character as not being reliant on her parents, instead trying to look after herself whilst she is in this difficult situation.
