WASTES IN KUWAIT MUNICIPAL INDUSTRIAL AGRICULTRAL WASTE All above wastes are dumped at 14 landfills
have been closed for more than 20 years due to operational problems and proximity to new residential, commercial, industrial areas

MENANCE OFLAND FILLS IN KUWAIT
Over the years most of the dump sites in Kuwait have been surrounded by residential commercial areas due to urban development.
Dump sites become breeding ground or toxic gases and spontaneous firesendangering the lives of people.
CONSTRUCTION &DEMOLITION WASTES Construction waste are used for rehabilitation purposes making aggregates in by EPIC
(Environment Preservation Industrial Co) avoiding land for dumping Kuwait led other countries in building and operating plant for to recycle construction waste
in 2004 under BOT. USED TYRES Used tyre about 7 million are accumulated in RAHYA 5 kms from new Jahra city.In April,
there was massive fire with emission of toxic gases Carbon monoxide (CO), Sulphur dioxide (SO2) oxides of nitrogen (NO)
Use of land-fills to store used tyres will be time bomb waiting to explode. Cause pollution on par with oilfields burning in 1990 with dengue epidemic
Municipality has decided disposal of tyres are to be as per resolution 75/5646 by a ministerial committee that emphasized avoiding land fill for used tyres and disposing in environ mentally sound methods .
TYPES OF WASTE IN KUWAIT
• Fire in tyre mountains & stockpiles. • Danger to life• Destruction of the built environment • Toxic smoke• Pyrolytic contamination of ground water
Environmental hazards
The Tyre Problem
Copyright Symphony Recycling Technologies Ltd
• Scrap tyres act as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other vermin.
• Works with other solutions to reduce malaria, dengue, filariasis, West Nile Fever, etc.
• Break the tyre – break the cycle
Health issues

HAZARDOUS WASTES Since 1999 all public authority for industry instructed all hazardous waste to be disposed in
specially prepared waste disposal site in Al-Shuiba area. But this is not environmentally preferable option due to long term adverse effects and
health impact.Extensive studies around world indicate links between cancer and exposure to hazardous waste.
SEWAGESLUDGE Kuwait consumes 132 gallons per capita with a population of 3.6 million There are 6 waste water treatment plants in Kuwait currently treating 750,000m3 of waste
water with converting waste to reusable water but producing residue called sewage sludge 125 tons with 30% moisture per day which will go up to 250TPD in 2015Presently, sewage
sludge are used as manure for gardenand desert soil stabilization. This will create future problem as sewage sludge must be((Class –A)) requirement prior to discharge and if land filled produce harmful gases
Usage of sewage sludge as fuel in cement plant utilizing waste heat from cement kiln for drying is a Environmental friendly service to Public and governments in Switzerland, Nether lands,Germany, China, Turkey are investing in machinery in local cement plants paying gate fee to cement plant to dispose sewage sludge offering environment service to cement industry’s WIN –WIN situation for government andCitizens
Contaminated sand drilling mud oil sludge from oil industry The Gulf war in 1991 due to oil spillage 300 oil lakes covering area of 50 sq. kms KOC is doing remediation projects for oil lakes damaged terrestrial resources category 70.
TYPESOF WASTE KUWAIT
PRESENT PROPOSAL - MUNICIPAL WASTE- At present Kuwait is in process of reorganizing waste
management as per world bank guide lines to produce electricity under BOT,under Partnership Technical Bureau utilizing the latest technologies to treat municipal solid waste in Kuwait .The Project aims to protect the environment and land resources and to generate alternate power sources electricity to be repurchased by ministry of electricity and water.
The project is located at KUBD 25 kms from Kuwait city.At area of 50000m2sorting treatment using incinerators for production electricity and land filling ashes from incinerator. The land filling waste will be 5 % of the feed municipal waste fed to sorting. A 30 year contract with winning investor with time frame 2years for installation.
