Study area
Darwin is Australia’s Northern Gateway capital city and its city
centre is the primary urban place in Darwin.
It is a great place to live, work, play and shop and is the priority
setting for office-based employment.
It is an exciting, engaging and inclusive place.
Darwin city centre clearly expresses the relaxed tropical lifestyle
of Darwin.
The Vision
1. Base the future on the past
2. Link the green and blue networks
3. Make new connections and links
4. Make a resource-efficient walkable city
5. Cool the city
6. Integrate parking, shopping and moving around
7. Plan for a smart, cultural city
8. Clarify the urban structure – centres, precincts and
neighbourhoods
Eight Design Rationales
More than 70 concepts make up the Darwin City Centre
Master Plan
• 24 Short term projects – 1 to 5 years
• 41 Medium term projects – 3 to 10 years
• 7 Long term projects – More than 10 years
The projects
The blueprint for 20 year growth
Darwin in 20 years
Darwin in 20 years
Darwin in 20 years
Darwin in 20 years
• The Darwin City Centre Master Plan presents the vision
• The NT Planning Commissioner has included the Darwin
City Centre Master Plan in the Draft Darwin Regional
Land Use Plan 2014
• The NT Government has committed $6 million for two
projects in its 2014/15 budget
• The City of Darwin has committed $3 million in its
2014/15 budget
What does this mean today?
Fly-through: Darwin of the future
Developing Northern Australia
• Darwin as Australia’s front door to Asia is not a cliché
the proof is in its history and current business, investment
and diplomatic relationships
• Darwin is the only capital city north of the Tropic of
Capricorn
• Capital cities – generate 80% of Australia’s GDP and
home to 75% of our workforce
Future development opportunities
• Darwin - the fastest growing capital city after Perth and has the
lowest population density
• Northern Territory's Gross State Product - experienced the highest
growth of all jurisdictions
• Darwin - the infrastructure and services of a competitive modern city
Developing Northern Australia
Further expenditure in
port + related road + rail networks
= growth
