Introduction to ARK UD and
the R-828 LVHF FM transceiver set
Written and Produced by (C/229 Strut) 19Jul 2014

1.The ARK UD is a VHF homing set designed primarily for search and rescue of downed aircraft and aircrews. The secondary purpose of the system is to direct the aircraft to airfields using VHF ground stations. The receiver is tuned to receive 6 preset VHF frequencies and one preset UHF emergency frequency. We are not sure but we believe in REAL LIFE new freqs when required are preloaded externally to the aircraft in some way because it cannot be done from the radio in the cockpit. Or maybe we are wrong !2.In the 229th we want to fly both the MI-8 and the Huey together in missions we make. So the problem we have is that the ARK UD VHF preset channels are below the freq range of the Huey and there-in lays our problem of trying to get both aircraft (MI-8 / Huey) to use the same freqs for FM homing. Another fix could be to just add additional beacons for the MI-8 in the mission editor, but I believe that is just more messing around unnecessarily.3.This lesson is about instructing 229th members how to over come the frequency incompatibility by the use of the R-828 VHF FM Transceiver Set in conjunction with the ARK UD. The R-828 set has 10 slots available for frequencies compatible with the freq range on the Huey FM homing radio. Pre-loaded compatible freqs need to be loaded before missions at DCS World\mods\aircrafts\Mi-8MTV2\Cockpit\Scripts\Devices_specs\R_828. Lua . The Lua file can be 'injected' into DCS sim files via the GME mod folder (or if you don't have GME you can place into the game files manually). 4.If you only want to run the MI-8 by itself using the ARK UD then it is a simple matter of using the ARK UD by itself and using its preset freqs or editing new ones in its own lua.

5.In this lesson you will be taught the procedure to operate the ARK-UD Homing Set and R-828 Transceiver that is installed on MI-8MTV Helicopter.

6.The reason you are being taught the ARK-UD and R-828 Transceiver is so you as a MI-8 MTV pilot will know how to operate and use the ARK-UD Homing Set and R-828 Transceiver in all practical situations to aid in navigation of the aircraft to achieve your mission, whatever that may be!

7.At the end of this lesson you will be able to operate and use the ARK-UD Homing Set and R-828 Transceiver for :
a.Search and Rescue, eg downed aircraft and crew, lost puppies !
b.Support Military Operations, eg infil and exfil of Spec Ops troops, beer runs, and

c.Detect and use VHF ground station signals for Airfields and pub locations.

I wont describe the settings and insult your intelligence its straight forward. This button is importantto remember, it activates the Selected Channel.

Operation
Step 1

On the ARK UD set the mode selector on to NARROW.

Step 2

When used alone not with the R828 Select the pre-set channel you require, it will be given to you in your mission brief.Otherwise leave it on 1.

Set Frequency switch to UP Position (MW) for VHF

Step 3

On the Co-Pilots SPU-7 ICS Control Boxselect ARK -UD

Switch to Radio

Step4

a. Switch to ON

c. Select Freq

b. Set to Compass

d. Press and hold button down until the Green SquelchLight flickers, thisconfirms the freqis set.

Step 5

Switch to VHF, and watchthe needle swing to point In the beacons direction.

Set HSI Course Set Needles to superimpose over the SingleWhite Pointer Indicator Needle

Conclusion

8.Your settings are now complete. You should follow your needles indicated direction and fly to your destination. The needle will swing and continue to point if you pass its beacon.

9.In this lesson you have been taught the ARK-UD Homing Set and R-828 Transceiver. You will need to practice these methods to become proficient and utilise the MI-8 MTV navigation systems to good effect.

10.Have fun, Regards (C/229th) Strut.
