Infectious disease
Primarily affects the liver
Caused by the Hepatitis C
Virus
Acute or Chronic Illness
Diagnosed by: Antibody Test and RNA test◦ Antibody: ever had it
◦ RNA: currently have it and viral load
HCV enters the
body
HCV attaches to
liver cell
HCV enters liver
cell
HCV uncoats
HCV makes viral
proteins and
replicates RNA
HCV puts
together new
viruses
new viruses exit
cellREPEAT
15-20% clear the virus on their own
Positive for antibody test, negative for RNA test
75-85% develop a chronic infection
Of these, 20% get cirrhosis, liver cancer or failure
1-5% die
Smooth 3 pound internal organ about the size of a football
Processes everything we eat/drink
Biliary system
Production facility
Processing plant
Storage and filtration
HCV enters liver, and elicits an immune system response
Immune system attacks liver cells, causing inflammation and eventual scarring
Scarring = cell death
When the cells of the liver die, they are no longer able to perform the functions of the liver
Liver
Inflammation
•By fighting, immune cells damage the liver
•If unstopped, inflammation turn into scarring (fibrosis)
•Can recover from minor scarring
•Treatment: interferon, acupuncture and herbal treatment, diet changes,
lifestyle changes
Cirrhosis
•Irreversible scarring
•Compensated: liver works; decompensated: doesn’t work
•Symptoms: ascites, swelling of legs, small red blood vessels on the skin,
bleeding hemorrhoids, decreased urination, nosebleed or bleeding gums,
breast development in men, severe itching, bone loss
Liver Failure
•Portal hypertension
•Ascites
•Encephalopathy
•Need a liver transplant
Liver Cancer
•Hepatocellular carcinoma
•Primary liver cancer
•Early stage- resection or transplant
surgery
•Late stage- drug trials
Spreads through infected blood
Shared needles (most common)
Mother child (4 of 100 infants from HCV-infected mother)
Sex (1%-4% chance)
Everyday materials: toothbrush, razor
Occupational exposure (1.8% average risk)
Transfusions of blood or blood products (prior to 1992)

Union or binding of body and mind
Coordination and control of all forces within the body, leading to perfection in the functioning of all organs
Two Types:◦ Shavasana
High blood pressure, cardiac diseases, headache, dizziness, mental weakness, hot flushes and insomnia
◦ Vajrasan Relaxes kneecaps, knees, ankles, and feet
Imporves digestion and removes gas
Relieves sciatica pain

14 meridians (channels) in the body that control the flow of bioenergy/bioelectricity
Each meridian controls all types of cells corresponding to the body part
The flow is at a maximum once every 24 hours◦ Liver maximum is from 1-3 am
If an organ is diseased, certain points on the meridian will be painful
Disease can be relieved by pressing on these points
Acupressure points are the symptom and the cure
Acupressure point- 1 sq cm
Can have an anesthetic effect, sedative effect, homeostatic/immunity enhancing, psychological effect

Many diseases caused by lack of water in the body (internal dehydration)
Little success in cases of◦ Disease caused by vitamin/mineral deficiencies
◦ Ailments needing surgery
◦ Severe infections of vital organs
◦ Life threatening diseases (cancer, AIDs, liver cirrhosis)
◦ Kidney failure/ congestive cardiac failure (internal water treatment forbidden)
Functions of Water◦ Quenches thirst
◦ Maintains body temperature
◦ Primary medium for body’s metabolism activities
◦ Maintains balance of electrolytes
◦ Effective transport medium for nutrients required in body
◦ Carries body’s waste products to liver and organs of excretory system (like kidney)
◦ Helps to eliminate stool from large intestine
Internal Therapy (drinking) or Hydrotherapy

Mantra- a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that is considered capable of creating transformation
Yantra- the Sanskrit word for instrument or machine
What’s the difference between mantra and yantra? It’s the difference between mind and body. While a mantra is a word or phrase you run across the mind to focus on, a yantra is a physical symbol upon which you meditate in order to engage the mind in a withdrawal of consciousness. A yantra is a visual tool that helps you center, simply put.
Yantra examples:◦ The lotus flower typically represent chakras ◦ A bindu is the most basic form, a dot, and it represents the starting point of all creation◦ A swastika represents good luck, welfare, prosperity or spiritual victory ◦ Circle = Energy of the element water◦ Square = Energy of the element earth◦ Upward-facing Triangle = Energy of the element fire; energy◦ Downward-facing Triangle = Energy of the element water; knowledge◦ Diagonal line = Energy of the element air◦ Horizontal line = Energy of the element water◦ Vertical line = Energy of the element fire◦ Point = Energy of the element ether

Drink 8-10 glasses of water or clear liquid a day
Normal:◦ 6-11 servings of grains per day
◦ 3-5 servings of vegetables pre day
◦ 2-3 servings of dairy per day
◦ 2-4 serving or fruits per day
◦ 2-3 servings of protein per day
For Hepatitis C Patients:◦ Protein: 1-1.5 g/kg/day
Vegetable protein may be easier tolerated than animal protein
◦ Carbs: 25% or less of total energy
◦ Fiber: 38 g/day (men) and 25 g/day (women)
◦ Lipids: 1.6 g/day (men) and 1.1 g/day (women)
◦ Fluids: 35 or 30 mL/kg/day
Reasons for Nutritional Intervention:• to provide adequate energy and
protein to facilitate hepatocyte regeneration
• to promote and maintain nitrogen balance, avoiding excess production of ammonia from endogenous or exogenous protein catabolism
• to avoid complications related to the role of the liver in intermediary metabolism of carbohydrate, lipids and protein
• to provide adequate vitamins and minerals
• to avoid fluid and electrolyte imbalance
• to treat or reduce symptoms or treatment side effects
• to prevent increased morbidity or death related to nutritional factors

•Telaprevir/boceprevir inhibit protease enzymes that HCV needs to
reproduce
•Now testing interferon-free dual oral regimen of simeprevir plus

•Achillion's next-generation HCV protease inhibitor ACH-2684
Treatment
•Hoping to develop a vaccine
•Hard because HCV mutates and evades the body’s immune responsesVaccine
Explanation of web site ( total well-being system) in next few slides…
We created a website , which will help in managing the Hepatitis c through the use of IT.
Disclaimer: This is a generic website design which could be taken and applied to most diseases in the world to help patients manage various western medicine and alternative treatment prescriptions. However, for this website, I have focused on Hepatitis C. Other possible applications: cancer, auto-immune diseases, etc.

Mantra/Yantra
• Pranayama means "breathing techniques" or "breath control". Ideally, this practice of opening up the inner life force is not merely to take healthy deep breaths. It is intended for yoga practitioners to help and prepare them in their meditation process
• In our respiration process, we breathe in or inhale oxygen into our body, going through our body systems in a form of energy to charge our different body parts. Then we exhale carbon dioxide and take away all toxic wastes from our body. Through the practice of Pranayama, the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide is attained. Absorbing prana through breath control links our body, mind, and spirit
• These are the four stages of Pranayama: Arambha - the commencement stage wherein the person's interest in Pranayama is awakenedGhata - the stage where the three sariras merge to envelope the soul. The three sariras are gross, subtle, and causal.Parichay- the stage where the yogi experiences the knowledge of PranayamaNispatti- the stage where the yogi goes beyond his physical body, and unites with the supreme
• BenefitsPranayama teaches us the proper way to breathePranayama reduces the toxins and body wastes from within our body. It prevents one from acquiring diseases.Pranayama helps in one's digestionPranayama develops our concentration and focusPranayama offers a better self-control
Instructions :1.Ideally kapalbhati should be done in the morning in empty
stomach, if early morning is a problem then it should be performed after 3-4 hours of meal.
2.One should sit in sukhasana or padmasana and should inhale passively and exhale forcefully. This provides aeration to blood circulation. Inhalation and exhalation should be from nostril and abdominal muscles should come into act
3.The duration should exceed to half an hour.
