the vision for the

future

so after the FP7 project… what?

agINFRA has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 283770

• a data infrastructure

• to support agricultural scientific communities

• to promote open data sharing

• to cultivate and enhance trust in agricultural science communities

what did our project promise

“We will promote research for food and agriculture, including research to adapt to, and mitigate climate change, and access to research results and technologies at national, regional and international levels.

We will reinvigorate national research systems and will share information and best practices.

We will improve access to knowledge”

Heads of State and Government, World Summit on Food Security, Rome, November 2009

our mandate

it’s March 2015: the agINFRAFP7 project has just ended…

…on April 2015: aginfra.eu is launched!

welcome aginfra.eu

• the European hub for data-powered research on agriculture, food and the environment

a) a research data sharing help desk & service point for H2020 projects in our thematic areas

b) a big (research) data machine & stack of technologies

c) an ecosystem for research data scientists, developers, startups

(a) H2020 research data service point

• aiming towards a community-specific reference point for research & academic institutions carrying out work with funding from the H2020 framework programme

– domain-specific support on implementation of EC’s (and other donors) Open Access requirements, Data Management Plans, etc.

– help publishing & linking research outcomes from H2020 projects (esp. publications, research data sets)

– serve as a hub for disseminating research outcomes to EU and global e-infrastructures (i.e. OpenAIRE, AGRIS)

cover all other relevant open policies

service to be user-friendly

(b) big research data machine

• aiming to provide the distributed technology stack & e-infrastructure for big data acquisition, aggregation, processing, and visualisation

– developers, data scientists, software companies may use customised big data technology stack & hosted software components through open APIs

– e-infrastructure providers collaborate & share cloud/grid resources for agricultural research experimentation & applications

scale up into open & federated registries

Meta-registry platform federating all existing registries & making information discoverable

Registries of data sources

Federated data registry

Federated information providers

Registries of bibliographic

collections

Federated pubs registry

Registries of software apps/components

Federated software registry

…etc

challenge: putting this together

• a back end platform that…– …will catalog all relevant information entities

– …will make all information machine readable and discoverable

– …will allow information providers express how, with whom, under which license and for which purposes they share this info

– …will help people utilize the collective power of information to solve societal challenges, better

– …will coordinate, consolidate and harmonize data & technology sharing among agri-food sectors and user communities

new aginfra.eu big data platform

new aginfra.eu e-infrastructure

what the evolved platform will do

• set up an open, scalable & sophisticated data aggregation architecture

• put in place automated registry data acquisition workflows to periodically discover & update registry information

– e.g. from national or community registries

• deploy various mechanisms to expose & present information globally to the community

– for machines: through appropriate APIs (e.g. RESTful, SPARQL, …)

– for people: through existing demonstrators that may be powered by aginfra.eu

(c) a data-powered ecosystem

• aiming to provide a hub for to support the European communities of data scientists, software companies, tech startups working with clients in the agri-food sector

– global public, private & societal stakeholders presenting their data-related problems

– EU technology developers present & demonstrate their apps & systems to the global stakeholders
