Composition of What Fireworks are Made Of Displaying chemicalcompounds used to make fireworks is not intended to be usedas a guideline on how to make homemade fireworks, but ratheras an educational tool to better understand the products that

you purchase and what makes them perform. Fireworks rely onthe chemical characteristics of the elements that are used to

make them. This special periodic table highlights the elementsthat have significance to fireworks and pyrotechnics.

Carbon is one of the main components of black powder, which is used as a propellent in fireworks. Carbonprovides the fuel for a firework. Common forms includecarbon black, sugar, or starch.

Barium is used to create green colors in fireworks, andit can also help stabilize other volatile elements.

Aluminum is used to produce silver and white flamesand sparks. It is a common component of sparklers.

04 Calcium is used to deepen firework colors. Calciumsalts produce orange fireworks.

Iron is used to produce sparks. The heat of the metaldetermines the color of the sparks.

Copper compounds produce blue colors in fireworks

Chlorine is an important component of many oxidizersin fireworks. Several of the metal salts that producecolors contain chlorine.

08 Potassium helps to oxidize firework mixtures. Potassiumnitrate, potassium chlorate, and potassium perchlorateare all important oxidizers.

Sodium imparts a gold or yellow color to fireworks, however, thecolor is often so bright that it frequently masks other, less intensecolors

Magnesium burns a very bright white, so it is used to add whitesparks or improve the overall brilliance of a firework.

Lithium is a metal that is used to impart a red color to fireworks.Lithium carbonate, in particular, is a common colorant.

12 Fireworks include oxidizers, which are substances that produceoxygen in order for burning to occur. The oxidizers are usuallynitrates, chlorates, or perchlorates. Sometimes the same substanceis used to provide oxygen and color.

Titanium metal can be burned as powder or flakes toproduce silver sparks.

Sulfur is a component of black powder, and as such, itis found in a firework's propellant/fuel.

Phosphorus burns spontaneously in air and is alsoresponsible for some glow in the dark effects. It maybe a component of a firework's fuel.

16Zinc is a bluish white metal that is used to createsmoke effects for fireworks and other pyrotechnicdevices.
