Page 5: World wartwo2

What does this mean? When Hitler was appointed Chancellor, Hindenburg signed

the ‘enabling act’ which basically allowed Hitler to have dictorial power without

legal objection

At this point, Hitler started the process of re-grouping and re-building his nation by breaking rules of the treaty of

Versailles

Such as....

Page 6: World wartwo2

Germany’s new ‘Fuehrer’ - Leaderbroke the rules of the treaty of Versailles by:

*Creating an Airforce*Reintroducing conscription

*Sending troops into the Rhineland, Austria and the Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia)

*Making a pact with Italy to create the Berlin-RomeAxis (the new power in Europe)

Why didn’t the other nations intervene during these years (1933 - 39)?

Friday, 10 May 13

Page 7: World wartwo2

*Because many thought the terms of the treaty were unreasonable

and

*Because the other nations were feeling threatened by Communism (Russian Communism) and

thought that the support of Germany to fight Communism could be needed.

11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts. Intellectuals and the inherent freedom of ideas and expression associated with them were anathema to these regimes. Intellectual and academic freedom were considered subversive to national security and the patriotic ideal. Universities were tightly controlled; politically unreliable faculty harassed or eliminated. Unorthodox ideas or expressions of dissent were strongly attacked, silenced, or crushed. To these regimes, art and literature should serve the national interest or they had no right to exist.

Remember point 11 from the 14 points of Fascism...?

However, the period of time before, during and after WWII served to provide much

inspiration to artists and musicians, as they often used their art to fight the Fascist regime.
