Vietnam WarDone by: Sara TS and Sondoss Al Dimasi 9A
How did the US eventually leave Vietnam?
• The Americans left Vietnam because they had failed.
• They had failed to "win the hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people.
• They had failed to build the so-called "Republic of Vietnam" as an independent and democratic nation.
• The Americans attempted to use their military as a solution to a political problem and failed.
• After causing the death of over 2million people, the Americans realized the whole "Domino Theory" was false and never likely to happen.
So in other words, after the great damages they caused in Vietnam, the US troops had largely left South Vietnam by 1972 under President Nixon's
program of Vietnamization.
War Powers Resolution of 1973•The War Powers Resolution of 1973 is a
federal law intended to check the President's power to commit the United States to an armed conflict without the consent of Congress.
• The Paris Peace Accords of 1973 intended to establish peace in Vietnam and an end to the Vietnam War, ended direct U.S. military involvement, and temporarily stopped
the fighting between North and South Vietnam.
Paris Peace Accords
President Nixon
•Richard Milhous Nixon.•37th President of the United States, serving from
1969 to 1974.•He subsequently served in the United States
Navy during World War II.•Nixon served for eight years as vice president.
Nixon’s Plan: Vietnamization and Peace with Honor
•President Nixon refused to accept the North Vietnamese peace terms. He believed that there were still military options.
•He called his approach Vietnamization – US forces would withdraw as ARVN troops assumed more combat duties.
