THE HOLOCAUST AND THE UNHOLY COST TO HUMANITY
(As the world marks the 69TH Holocaust Remembrance Week, let us take a look at this catastrophic episode in modern history, and the devastating effects on civilisation in the 20th century and beyond.)
• It is characteristic of the West to use footage of starving children in Ethiopia, Sudan, and sometimes in Nigeria [Biafra Civil War, 1967-1970] to whip up sentiment around the world.

• But have you seen [any] footage of the Holocaust, the gargantuan reduction of human beings to less than beasts of burden; used as slaves in concentration camps - systematically tortured and starved; gassed to death then burned in furnaces; lined up and shot; forced to dig their own graves, herded inside then shot dead; dumped in mass graves; endless rows of horribly emaciated bodies piled up in crammed detention centres?

• All the combined YouTube videos of victims of Boko Haram bombings, shootings, burnings and attacks till date will pale in Comparison to what Nazi-Germany perpetrated during WW II under Adolf Hitler and his lieutenants [from hell] of the 3rd Reich.

• It is important to note that all began as some loose SOCIO-POLITICAL idea that quickly gathered widespread support that snowballed into a desperate quest for regional power and futile attempt at world domination by the extermination of Jews, Gypsies, Africans and other races the Nazis termed 'sub humans'.

• In all they would allegedly kill over 10 million people; over 6 million of them Jews between 1933 and 1945; in what is now referred to as THE HOLOCAUST.

• We can draw parallels here, too, in what happened in Nigeria during the Civil War, the South-South militancy that almost crippled the nation, and now, the hydra headed monster called Boko Haram.

• The nation is struggling to stay afloat while grappling with several kinds of regional problems and political infighting threatening her existence as one sovereign united nation.

• A number of groups want to secede from the federation; another group is trying to force their ideology on the entire nation; waging guerrilla-styled warfare across northern states and continuously threatening to advance across the Niger.

• The problems are real as they are potentially capable of destroying the bonds that hold this nation together. It is no secret that the USA and other Western powers have predicted the obliteration of Nigeria in 2015.

• We must all draw lessons from the painful reality of the Holocaust, how Nazi-Germany schemed to rid the world of those they saw as 'inferior races' and the unparalleled waste of millions of lives of innocent people: infants, children, teenagers, the youth and the aged.

• The time has come to set aside religious/ethnic/tribal differences and face this alien threat to our continued existence. There cannot be growth and development without justice and equity, true, but we must dig deeper to find that human connection, that Nigerian spirit that we can rally around to put down Boko Haram, militancy, kidnapping, pipeline sabotage, ritual killings, 419, embezzlement and other vices retrogressing our growth and development as a nation.

• We must rise as one voice to condemn political feuds and religious intolerance; put an end to ethnicity and tribalism; stamp out favouritism and high-handedness; and collectively build a virile nation bonded in unity as one nation where every citizen has confidence in the Nigerian state as a formidable enterprise able to provide the basic necessities of good quality of life for all her citizens.
