The Fredonian Rebellion was the first clash between Anglos and the Mexican government in Texas. The Edwards brothers declared their colony of Fredonia independent from Mexico. Mexican troops quickly ended the rebellion most involved fled to the U.S. They were not successful.

The decree passed in 1829 abolished slavery in Mexico only. This caused fear among many Texas slaveholders it could be passed in Texas too.
