Introduction> We are discussing gun violence and what to do about it.

- Rights can be a problem if they grant us the ability to do more harm than good

- The rights of the 2nd Amendment as they currently stand protect the

American notion of shooting anyone you have a problem with

- We don’t fight crime by telling criminals they have the right to continue doing

what they are doing, and we therefore cannot fight gun violence by telling

people they have the right to these weapons that have killed so many and

continue to do so.

● Background

● Second Amendment- December 17 1791

● Caused problems over the last 100 years

Page 3: Problem Solving Panel Discussion: Gun violence history, causes and effects

What caused the problem?

● 2nd amendment caused problem● “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the

right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”

● Stricter gun laws (no guns) take away this

problem

● In 2007, Missouri repealed a handgun law

● After this, their murder rate increased by

16%

What is happening in the field?

● Originated with many mass shootings in the

US

is very widespread

Page 5: Problem Solving Panel Discussion: Gun violence history, causes and effects
Page 6: Problem Solving Panel Discussion: Gun violence history, causes and effects

● The majority of weapons used in

mass shootings were obtained

legally.

● If a ban on firearms was put in

place, there would be 49 less

shootings.

If no intervention takes place, will this issue remain at large?

If no intervention takes place, will this issue remain at large?

Between the years 2000 to 2008, the number of

mass shootings jumped from roughly 5 per year

to just over 15 shootings per year. If nothing is

done to stop this, the number could continue to

rise
