Dear Borya!

You were an outstanding son of our Russia.

You gave us hope in the 90s among this whole crowd of wretched red directors, outdated party operatives and has-been Komsomol members, who were occupied only with the sharing out of Soviet property for their own benefit. In that stormy time you didn't cream off anything for yourself, which was not typical for a man with your status of "potential successor". We remember all of this.

I remember well how you burned your own reputation, standing firmly against the attempts of B and G to grab Svyazinvest for themselves, which cost you your career when Yeltsin then said to you that he "was tired of protecting you". I remember how you attempted to carry out real reforms, at that moment when everyone else couldn't care less, and when these "everyones" ran between Tanya and Valya and the IMF, and you were one of the few who thought about the country.

I remember well how at the 2007 Duma elections, when liberal conformists close to power became degraded and attempted with all their might to cajole the Kremlin, you alone came out on radical opposition demonstrations and demanded a change in the entire course and entire system, when this was not yet fashionable. One very well-known and nowadays pro-Putin fellow at that time, in December 2007, said to me: If anyone has dignity remaining after these last Duma elections, then it's Borya Nemtsov and the SPS. This is the guy who now writes pro-Putin articles about how the West screwed up in Ukraine, treacherously attempting to draw it into NATO. But then he secretly enthused about you.

I remember how after those elections you called me and proposed writing a report about Putin. It's now that everyone knows who the Rotenbergs and Timchenko are, but at that time the devotee to the cause of anti-corruption was you. You were the first who brought this subject out into the mainstream, so that everyone could speak about it.

I remember how you personally covered half of Sochi on foot, and for two months frequented the courtyards and foyers of apartment buildings in order to meet normal people, and to tell them how it's possible to govern the city completely differently, and to live in it in a completely different way. I remember the faces of those people. You left to go to other meetings and didn't hear it, but they stayed behind and talked for a long time about what a guy you were.

In recent years you and I went our separate ways, and I was openly at a loss as to why you needed all this running around doing lonely pickets, being detained by the police, tweets from police wagons, and 15-day arrests. But no one can say that this is unworthy of respect. You, the former vice-premier, who Yeltsin introduced to Clinton and Kohl as his successor as future ruler of

Russia, considered it possible to fight with the authoritarian Putin system simply in a precisely and literally daily, physical sense, disregarding all inconvenience and discomfort. This was extremely far from typical for a high-level politician, to not run away from the risk of all of this: being detained, stuck into a tiny concrete chamber for New Year, fed some kind of unrecognizable muck in solitary confinement, to stand in the rain in pickets and to get there on foot without bodyguards, to constantly have shit poured on oneself and to get brilliant green antiseptic thrown into your face by provocateurs. This was completely untypical behaviour for those who even just once put their foot on the highest step of state administration in Russia. And this provided new hope: that not everything is so bad in our country, now that there are people ready to forgo their former status for the sake of our country's future.

You and I had large difference of opinion, on account of which I was angry with you, and you with me. But you understand perfectly well where you were wrong, and I think that I also understand where I was wrong. You remember how we jokingly discussed that your birthday is on the same day as Lennon (October 9th) and mine as McCartney (June 18th) :)) In the end we began to work together again, because a great purpose appeared. Don't be angry with me for whatever crap. Forgive me for everything. You were one of the greats. I am very glad that fate brought us together. I and my loved ones, friends and colleagues will never forget you. All our disputes were appropriate when you were living and in good health. Now it's all for memoirs. I would give a lot to sit and drink with you in order to express to you directly all that I think of you, and, well, also no doubt to hear something similar in reply.

You must understand that all this was not in vain. People who want change in Russia will always remember you and honour your name. You earned it.

And now to everyone else.

1. Enough wailing. Borya would never have approved of this wailing. He always looked forward. For the sake of Nemtsov, pull yourself together. It is necessary to discuss with a sober head how we will avenge him.

2. I do not believe in "everyday" and "criminal" versions of murder. Such killers understand very well who we're talking about, and that this murder is of an ultra-high profile, and that right away all the King's men will begin to hunt them down, the more so to demonstrably hang them, so as to say "we keep law and order in the country regardless of". I also do not for a second believe in "dead zones without video cameras". I as a former official understand very well what kind of place this is, this ancestral plot of land of the special services.In my view, there are two versions: (1) Nemtsov was killed by the authorities, (2) Nemtsov was killed by some goons from the ranks of the "newrussified to the max", whose violence and madness was provoked by the imperial hysteria of the authorities in the last year.By my own estimation (I can make mistakes and I make no claims on the truth, it's simply a personal estimation), the ratio is at minimum 60 to 40 in favor of version (1) (the authorities). The aim? Number one: Nemtsov was a very important operator of protest activity, who co-ordinated the efforts of completely different political powers and who possessed serious organizational and financial possibilities, and the authorities knew this perfectly well. There is no comparable operator/co-ordinator, recognized by all, on the earth; others have all sorts of conflicts. Aim number two: fear. If you want to force people to shut up in regards to their sharp criticism of authority, who do you

select as the target? Are there other candidacies on a comparable scale? Do I mean in order to shut up once and for all? Here's your answer.

3. To those who want to intimidate the opposition, to force it to throw up its banners and leave Russia: it won't work. You will rot on the dump of history. But we will help you in this. As one of your ideological predecessors said, when they killed his elder brother, and this was no fool, "we will go in a different way".

4. Be sure to come out for the opposition events in the next few days. On no account should you be scared and sit at home. Perfectly good people are already being shot on the streets for their views and position, this cannot be tolerated. Come out. I'm not giving links right now about where to go and how to get there, the opposition is discussing various options. I personally on arrival in Moscow will immediately go to the place of the murder to lay flowers and pay my respects. But only on no account should you sit at home.

Мы все это помним.Я хорошо помню как ты сжег свою репутацию, грудью встав против попыток Б. и Г. отхватить себе "Связьинвест", что стоило тебе карьеры - когда потом Ельцин сказал тебе, что "устал тебя защищать". Я помню как ты пытался проводить реальные реформы, в тот момент, когда всем было пофиг, и эти "все" бегали между Таней и Валей и МВФ, а ты был одним из немногих кто думал о стране.

Я хорошо помню как на думских выборах 2007 года, когда околовластные либеральные конформисты скурвились и пытались всеми силами охаживать Кремль, ты единственный выходил на митинги радикальной оппозиции и требовал смены всего курса и всей системы, когда это еще не было модно. Один очень известный и ныне запутинский чувак тогда, в декабре 2007-го, сказал мне: "Если у кого и осталось на прошедших думских выборах достоинство, то это у Бори Немцова и СПС". Это сейчас этот чувак пишет запутинские статьи о том, как Запад накосячил в Украине, коварно пытаясь втянуть ее в НАТО. А тогда он втайне восторгался тобой.Я помню как после тех выборов ты позвонил мне и предложил написать доклад о Путине. Это сейчас все знают о том кто такие Ротенберги и Тимченко, а тогда энтузиастом этой антикоррупционной темы был ты. Ты первый вывел эту тему в мейнстрим в таком виде, чтобы все об этом говорили.Я помню как ты лично обошел пол-Сочи ногами, два месяца ходил по дворам и подъездам, чтобы пообщаться с обычными людьми, и рассказать им о том, что городом можно управлять совсем по-другому, и жить в нем совсем по-другому. Я помню лица этих людей. Ты уходил на другие встречи и не слышал этого, а они оставались и долго обсуждали, какой ты крутой.

В последние годы мы с тобой разошлись, и я откровенно недоумевал - зачем тебе вот эти все бегания по одиночным пикетам, задержания милицией, твиты из автозака, аресты на 15 суток. Но никто не может сказать, что это недостойно уважения - ты, бывший вице-премьер, которого Ельцин представлял своим преемником Клинтону и Колю как будущего правителя России, считал возможным бороться с авторитарной путинской системой просто вот в буквальном ежедневном, физическом смысле, невзирая на все неудобства и дискомфорт. Это было крайне нетипично для политика крупного уровня, не убегать от риска этого всего - быть задержанным, посаженным в крохотную бетонную камеру на Новый год, накормленным какой-то непонятной херней в изоляторе, стоять под дождем в пикетах и приходить туда пешком без охраны, быть постоянно поливаемым дерьмом и получать в лицо зеленкой от провокаторов. Это было совершенно нетипичное поведение для тех, кто хоть раз попал на высшую ступень государственного управления в России. И это давало новую надежду - на то, что не все так плохо в нашей стране, раз есть люди, готовые поступиться своим былым статусом ради мечты о будущем нашей страны.У нас были с тобой большие разногласия, из-за чего ты на меня был злой, а я на тебя. Но ты же понимаешь прекрасно, в чем ты был неправ - думаю, что и я понимаю, в чем был неправ я. Помнишь, как мы с тобой шутливо обсуждали, что у тебя день рождения в один день с Ленноном (9 октября), а у меня с Маккартни (18 июня) :)) В итоге мы начали снова совместно работать, потому что появилась большая цель. Вот наша последняя совместная фотка...Не злись на меня за всякую херню. Прости меня за все. Ты был великий. Я очень рад что судьба свела нас вместе. Я и мои близкие, друзья, коллеги - мы тебя никогда не забудем. Все наши споры были уместными, когда ты был живой и в добром здравии. Сейчас это все - для мемуаров. Я бы многое отдал, чтобы посидеть и выпить с тобой, чтобы высказать тебе прямо все что я о тебе думаю, ну и не сомневаюсь, услышать что-то похожее в ответ.Ты должен понимать, что все это было не зря. Люди, которые хотят перемен в России, всегда будут тебя помнить и чтить твое имя. Ты заслужил.

Теперь всем остальным.1. Хватит выть. Боря бы это ваше вытье никогда не одобрил. Он всегда смотрел вперед. Ради Немцова - возьмите себя в руки. Надо с трезвой головой обсудить, как мы им отомстим.2. Я не верю в "бытовые" и "криминальные" версии убийства. Такие убийцы прекрасно понимают о ком идет речь, что это убийство сверхвысокого профиля, что за ними тут же начнет охотиться вся королевская рать, да еще чтобы показно повесить их типа "мы следим за порядком в стране вне зависимости от".Я также ни секунды не верю в "мертвую зону без видеокамер" - я как бывший чиновник прекрасно представляю себе что это за место, это вотчина спецслужб.На мой взгляд, версии две: (1) Немцова убили власти, (2) Немцова убили какие-то отморозки из числа "новоросснутых на всю голову", чье насилие и сумасшествие было спровоцировано имперской истерией властей последнего года.По моей личной оценке (я могу ошибаться и не претендую на истину, это просто личная оценка), соотношение минимум 60 на 40 в пользу версии (1) (власти). Цель? Номер раз: Немцов был очень важным оператором протестной активности, координировавшим усилия совершенно разных полит.сил и обладавшим серьезными организационными и финансовыми возможностями, и власти это прекрасно знали. Сопоставимого такого оператора-координатора на земле, признаваемого всеми, нет - у других есть всякие конфликты. Цель номер два: страх. Если вы хотите заставить людей заткнуться по части резкой критики власти, кого вы выберете в качестве мишени? Есть другие кандидатуры сопоставимого масштаба? Я имею в виду заткнуться раз и навсегда? Вот вам и ответ.3. Тем кто хочет запугать оппозицию, заставить ее побросать знамена и уехать из России: ничего не выйдет. Гнить на свалке истории будете вы. Но мы вам в этом поможем. Как говорил один ваш идейный предшественник, когда убили его старшего брата - а он был неглупый человек - "мы пойдем другим путем".4. Обязательно выходите на оппозиционные акции в ближайшие дни. Ни в коем случае нельзя бояться и сидеть дома. Нормальных людей уже на улицах отстреливают за их взгляды и позицию, это нельзя терпеть. Выходите. Не даю

ссылок сейчас куда и как идти, потому что вижу - оппозиция обсуждает разные варианты, лично я завтра по прилете в Москву сразу поеду на место убийства, возложить цветы и отдать дань памяти. Но только ни в коем случае не сидите дома.Боря, покойся с миром. Мы тебя никогда не забудем.
