Mathies Airman Leadership School’s mission is to prepare Air force personnel in the rank of Senior Airmen for supervisory responsibility and foster a commitment to the Profession of Arms.

The halls of Mathies ALS are decorated with the Air Force vision as well as items displaying Air Force heritage.

A large portion of the heritage items are in honor of our namesake, Sergeant Archibald Mathies.

Sgt Archibald Mathies was born in Scotland on 3 June 1918. Sgt Mathies was an engineer and ball turret gunner on a B-17 that was attacked by enemy fighters during a mission to Leipzig, Germany. The copilot was killed, the pilot and radio operator wounded and the plane severely damaged, Sgt Mathies and the remaining crew flew the plane back to England. All crew members jumped to safety, Mathies refused to leave the injured pilot and attempted to land the plane. On the third attempt the plane crashed, killing all on board. A model of Sgt Mathies plane, the 10 Horse Power, is on display in the Student Lounge.

There are four flight rooms in Mathis ALS. Each flight room can accommodate up to 16 students. All are equipped with the most up-to-date technology; 50 inch plasma screen and two internet-ready desk-top computers directly linked with the College of Enlisted Professional Military Education.

This library is set up to assist student research in preparation for class related assignments. Along with hard copy books, there are also 8 computers with internet access for student research. This room contains artifacts from the CMSAF past and present.

The Student Lounge is a place for students to relax while on break, or at lunch. You can take in the historical items that decorate the room or challenge your classmates to a game of foosball or air hockey.

The Mathies ALS Auditorium is where mass briefings occur. This is also where your commanders, command chiefs, chiefs, first sergeants and other distinguished visitors will speak to the class.
