José Joaquim Pereira Falcão was born in Miranda do Corvo on the 1st June 1841 and died in Coimbra, on 14th january 1893.

He was a maths teacher in Coimbra’ University and a republican politician.

He Graduated in the Maths and Philosophy faculties in 1858 .

On 8th September 1870 he was nominated maths master substitute and assistant at Coimbra astronomic Observatory.

In1874 he became a professor and was nominated director of the Observatory on July 28th, 1890. He taught Celestial Mechanics and Astronomy.

Jose Falcão was a liberal man and a great defender of republican ideas. He wrote for republican newspapers in the country, especially on matters of education.

• After the failure in Coimbra, José Falcão was in charge of reorganizing the Republican Party in Porto.

• There he wrote political articles in the republican newspaper “Voz Púlica” (“Public Voice”).

• In October 1892 he became a deputy and died soon after.
