IS TERRORISM THE REASON OR CONSEQUESNCE?
KAKAJAN HAYTLYYEV

This is
a VERY complicated topic.
However, the tragedy
in Berlin
on 19th December 2016
whereby a truck was driven
into a Christmas market,
killing 12 people
convinced me to try
and
explain my point of view.

I would think that those who were killed, woke up in the
morning, had their breakfast, had a small talk with their loved
ones. Most probably they did not even mention that they are
planning to go to the Christmas market.
I assume that perhaps they were too busy at work to buy
Christmas presents in advance. They wanted to buy something
special for their loved ones. I am sure that they wanted to make
them happy. They had no idea that something unthinkable is
about to unfold.
I will not be able to imagine how tragic it might have been for
the victims' family and loved ones to learn what happened.
Besides inexplicable grief, these people would have to go
through something which even Devil himself would have never
thought about - they must deal with their loss when the entire
world celebrates Christmas.
I wish I could say that it would be the last case when innocent
people killed for God knows what. But I know, just like all of
us, that this is not the last case. I also hate to say that next time
it might be me or you among those who could be killed by a
deranged fanatic.
I am convinced that to deal with this monster named
"terrorism", the conventional position of strength will not be
effective whatsoever. Moreover, it would only make things
worse. Because hatred creates only hatred in response.

I always knew that terrorism is evil. Those who decided to kill
innocent people, for whatever reason, shall be either behind
the bars or eliminated at the crime scene, without wasting
taxpayer’s money for the trial and keep them in jail.
Having said that, it is very important to highlight that
terrorism is not the main reason. In my opinion, it is rather a
consequence. Therefore, it is vital for us to identify the main
reason that just like doctor diagnose cancer centre. Because so
far, it seems we confused it with metastasis that cancer spreads.
Until recently I did not have clarity on this issue. But one day I
was watching CNN report on the blast that killed many people
at the Brussels International Airport, whereby they interviewed
one young girl from the United States.
As far as I remember, the girl arrived at the airport half an hour
earlier than she supposed to. She just decided to go earlier for
absolutely no reason. "No reason" saved her life.
Since the airport was immediately closed, she had to travel to
Paris and only then could fly to New York to reunite with her
family. I was happy to know that at least for some people there
was a happy end. But I also thought that this poor girl would
have to live with it for the rest of her life - very unfair.
I did not expect, however, that she will help me to finally find
the lead which would strongly suggest it could be the core

reason. During the interview, she said (as far as I remember)
that initially, she was scared but then she got angry because
these people are attacking her, her loved ones, and their way of
life.
The moment she said it, I thought that it is correct. Now, if we
apply the same expression to the other party it will become
clear to us why it is happening.
After this interview, I tried to understand how my
interpretation of this world would change if my life would go
upside down in a blink of an eye? What if events of that fateful
day would unfold suddenly without warning?
I thought if, let's say, my family and I have lunch or dinner. We
enjoy the meal while having light and pleasant conversation.
We are joking. My wife and children are laughing loud because
of my jokes. Suddenly, bomb lands on the roof of our house
and half of my family are gone in an instant.
I pray to God for that this scenario would never happen to us.
However, if it would, I do not think that my civilised manners
would remain the same. Most likely, I would lose a human face
because of inexplicable loss I have just suffered and no
explanation is given why it had to be this way.
I am not sure if I would go and kill someone who has nothing
to do with my tragedy. But the key words here are "I am not

sure". I cannot guarantee it because with all my rich
imagination I cannot understand the depth of pain.
I only assume that my emotional suffering will escalate because
I would watch those brainless on TV who continue to promote
the superiority of one nation over the other.
Therefore, if we do not want to be the next victim of the
deranged fanatic, we shall not support those who say that war
is the only answer. Or, other deranged fanatics. Those people
who wear suits or uniforms and speak English or other
languages, other than Arabic.
