Council updateThe three Cockfosters ward councillors,Michael Lavender, Paul McCannah andLionel Zetter would like to thank all thosewho supported us at the local electionson May 6th. We will of course be workinghard over the next four years to representall Hadley Wood residents regardless ofhow they voted!

indeed the accurate word because manycolleagues could not sit due to a problemConservative MPs have not experiencedfor over 13 years – a lack of space due tothe large numbers of colleagues. Wewelcomed to his seat David Cameron asour leader but not at that time the PrimeMinister. An hour before, Gordon Brownhad made a desperate plea for the LiberalDemocrats to negotiate with Labour. So ina highly politically charged meeting thestakes were high as we agreed to areferendum on an alternative votingsystem as part of a package to agree acoalition government with the LiberalDemocrats.

On Tuesday afternoon the coalitionfinally reached agreement and GordonBrown packed his bags and left for thePalace. I was in the Commons as DavidCameron started the historic journey tothe Palace and later met back incommittee room 14 with elatedcolleagues now as Prime Minister.

We have entered a new era of politics.Whilst it will take a while to get used to LibDems on the same front benches asConservative colleagues, I do believe thatmost of the public want us work togetherto tackle the immense problems in oureconomy and society.

Two weeks on from the election I amdelighted that the HealthSecretary Andrew Lansleyvisited Chase Farm Hospitalto fulfil one of the keycampaign pledges – to haltthe downgrade of ChaseFarm’s A&E and maternityservices. We now need towork together – the Council,GPs and public to make surewe continue to have

Bus thieves at workA group of female thieves have been atwork on our 399 bus. Two of the oldermembers of our community have beenrobbed during journeys to and fromBarnet. Diversionary tactics such as apurse contents dropped onto the flooror jostling have been used.Unconfirmed reports say that the policehave caught two of these criminals.

In the box with the bus picture andarticle. Please could we rename article‘Robbery on the 399’ and use this text.

Robbery on the 399A group of female thieves have been

in action on our 399 bus and a ladyresident robbed during a journey fromBarnet. The process is thought to havestarted in Waitrose when the criminalmust have observed her pin numberbeing entered at the check-out. Twoyoungish foreign women joined the bus

to Hadley Wood. One claimed to bepregnant and asked for directions to ahospital. She then dropped the contentsof her purse on the floor of the bus.Helpful passengers assisted in pickingup the coins. During this diversionarytactic our neighbours purse was takenfrom her bag by the accomplice, thebank card taken out and the pursereturned.

Only after a call from the bank next daydid the victim realise herbankcard was taken. By then£600 had been spent. The theftwas reported to the police andthe case was dealt with by aspecial police groupinvestigating gang crime of thissort in London. Happily the busCCTV which was of a very highquality revealed the whole eventquite clearly. The two thieves

were arrested and are now serving 18month prison sentences. At all stagesthe police were very helpful as wasLouis the bus driver. The victim stresseshow important it is to ALWAYS shieldthe ATM screen with your hand whenentering your PIN number. Criminals arenow trained to visualise your PIN evenfrom a distance by noting your handmovements and the positions of thebuttons you are pressing. Take care.

Certificate, before marketing can start. This means that you or your agent musthave instructed an accredited EnergyAssessor to carry out an energyperformance assessment, and must useall reasonable efforts to ensure that anEPC is available within 28 days of aproperty going on the market. Former HIPproviders may be able to provide thisservice if they are accredited under ascheme as an energy assessor. The dutyto provide an EPC falls on the seller, andon the landlord in a letting situation.Agents in particular should note that theduty to include energy information inwritten particulars is retained.

The process is straightforward, andinvolves an energy assessor inspecting theproperty, asking the owner questionsabout the property, and providing theCertificate. The whole process - fromarranging the inspection, to receiving theCertificate – need take no longer than aweek, and should cost around £50 for anaverage property. EPC’s are valid for 10years.

There is a fixed penalty of £200 for non-compliance, and enforcement is theresponsibility of Trading StandardsOfficers.

Was the HIP’s unpopularity deserved?I admit to being one of those who cameto support the concept. Theselling/renting process - like most thingsin life – benefits from certainty. Thestructured and standardised provision ofinformation required by the HIP gives allconcerned a clear understanding of whatis required, of who is responsible forproviding it, and even by when. Now thatthe property world has that discipline -and resultant increased efficiency - atleast to some extent ingrained in itsprocedures, it would be a pity to abandonit. It can certainly be improved upon, buteven if the name disappears, let us staywith the concept.Guy Wheatcroft, RHY Law LLP, 01707621105

Stress

May I tell you about an American biologistand author. He is currently Professor ofBiological Sciences, and Professor ofNeurology and Neurological Sciences, and by courtesy, Neurosurgery, atStanford University USA. As aneuroendocrinologist, he has focused hisresearch on issues of stress and neuronaldegeneration, as well as on thepossibilities of gene therapy strategies forprotecting susceptible neurons fromdisease. His popular book, Why Zebrasdon’t get Ulcers describes the effects ofstress on the human body and is one ofthose ‘must-reads’ for all. I was luckyenough to pose some commonly asked

Vandals in the woodsSome local lads decided to do someamateur tree felling in the woods recently.Luckily they were apprehended by aresident and the Police were involved.Having realised how damaging theiractivities had been the boys were clearlyremorseful and are helping us to clear upthe mess. The woods in our Open Spaceover and around the railway bridge maylook a bit untidy but we take advice atregular intervals from a local firm of tree experts. They carry out whatevercorrective measures are needed for the safety of local walkers and children. We had a major review a few years agobut the cost of a complete overhaul of the wooded areas was prohibitivelyexpensive and more than the HWA couldafford. One of these days perhaps. Thesewoods are important for the health andrecreation of our community. We all needto look after them.HWA

questions for Prof Sapolsky; his repliesare worth noting!Q. What do you feel is the main adverseeffect stress has on the human body?A. “Well, there’s a number of particularlyvulnerable outposts. Probably the mostfrequent adverse effects arehypertension, sleep disruption, disruptionin concentration, depression, increasedincidence of colds, sexual dysfunction.”Q. What would be your 3 top tips to helpsomeone suffering from stress?A. “I’d say, 1) as per the cliche, distinguish between stressors you canand can’t control and, in the case of theformer, find ways to increase the senseof control; 2) when the stressor isuncontrollable, at least strive forpredictive information about when it iscoming, how long it is going to last, andhow bad it will be; 3) increase theamount of social support you get andgive. Mind you, all this is said bysomeone who mostly thinks aboutstressed rats and neurons growing inPetrie dishes.”Q. Do you feel that diet can helpsomeone suffering from stress sincemany people report using B-vitamins canhelp them manage better?A. “Well, it can certainly head off someof the adverse effect (e.g., largeamounts of antioxidants delaying theemergence of some of the long-termpathologies of stress). What’seven clearer is that a bad dietis particularly bad news in thecontext of stress. Forexample, a combination of ahigh fat diet plus chronicpsychosocial stress causes asynergistic increase inatherosclerosis in monkeys.”There you have it... from theexperts mouth! It is a medium sizedsuburban garden which Julie herselfdescribes as a manicured jungle jam-packed with many varieties of plants. Dear Editor Sergeant Richardson at the High BarnetSafer Neighbourhood has informed us ofan increase in purse and handbag theftson the High Street, generally occurring

money. Please ensure bags are not lefton shopping trolleys, pushchairs, or onthe backs of seats /under seats inrestaurants and coffee shops. There hasbeen increased policing on the HighStreet to help tackle this.

Louis Dunn-Allen is an outstandingyoung golfer currently working at theHadley Wood Golf Club under thesupervision of Peter Jones the HeadProfessional.

He has been successful in gaining aplace on a US College golf squadrepresenting Brevard Community Collegein Florida. It is a wonderful opportunity forhim as it would help to further hisdevelopment as a golfer in thecompetitive environment of the USCollege sport system, It would also allowhim to continue his studies.

He needs to support himself financiallywhilst studying and is trying to raise fundsfrom sponsorship, entrepreneurial ideasand by working whilst studying andtraining.

Louis has started the fund raisingprocess by taking on a golf marathon. The challenge being to complete 6rounds of golf, three at Hadley Wood andthree at Bush Hill Park all in the space of24 hours! He has designed a competitionfor potential sponsors and in this wayhopes to raise some money towards thecollege fees and living expenses in hisfirst year.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor The Council have today asked residentsfor their opinions appertaining to the'Wheelie bin pilot scheme'. I personally donot feel that it has been a success. Iagree that the black sacks were unsightlyon bin collection days; however it isequally unsightly to see residents leavingtheir wheelie bins on their driveways, infront of their houses, every day of theweek.

An important fact that has goneunaddressed, despite many emails to thecouncil is the bins outside the row oflisted cottages on Cockfosters Rd. Mostof the cottage residents leave theirwheelie bins on the pavement. Cars are

permitted to park on these pavements aswell leaving very limited access forpedestrians to walk past. The bins are adanger to the disabled or the blind. Ingale force winds the wheelie bins couldfly across the road and cause a fatal carcrash. I would like to know who would beheld responsible in this likely event - theresidents or the council.

For this scheme to work I feel that theneeds of individuals should beconsidered and recycling bins to suit theirtype of residence should be taken intoaccount. It is not feasible for councilplanners to sit behind a desk, pick out anarea on a map and think that all housesin that area should have the samefacilities to accommodate thesemonstrosities. Perhaps, we could havethe views from other residents on thissubject. Dr.Julie Allen-Anand

Dear Editor In Spain, on secondary roads which passthrough villages, the speed of motoristsis controlled by traffic lights. These areactivated to red when the approachingcar is speeding. The delay is short butfrustrating and affects following cars. Aseverybody now has to wait until the lightsturn green again, it makes the offendingdriver think twice about speeding.
