Gujarat Contribution to INDIA

• Gujarat contribution to overall Indian Economy• The chart clarifies that Gujarat is contributing to 25% of India’s exports which

leads to high Foreign exchange earnings for India – thus helping out with tradedeficit numbers

• SOURCE: CMIE, ASI 2010-11, Economic Survey 2011-12

GDP

• Gujarat Share in India’s GDP has gone up by almost 2 percentage points: near

30% jump in contribution

NET STATE DOMESTIC PRODUCT

Debt to GDP Ratio

• While Debt to GDP ration for India has gone up, Gujarat has done better on

that front by reducing the same by more than 50%

PER CAPITA NSDP

UNEMPLOYMENT

‘PUCCA’ ROOF

• Concrete roof is a sign of prosperity. With close to half households in Gujarathaving a ‘Pucca’ roof over their head, (and a 33% increase in the last 10 years, while increasing the gap over national average) Gujarat shows India the waytowards development that is ‘Inclusive’

• Birth Rate in isolation does not necessarily present a concrete indicator ofhealthcare facilities (A lower birth rate can simply signify that the state is doinga commendable job of population control).

HDI VALUE

• The overall improvement in Gujarat HDI is more than India. If we look at 2001numbers, Gujarat was at ~ 0.450 and between 01 & 08, the improvement has beensubstantial

HDI - INDIA

• HDI 2001 – 0.450 (Ranking not known)• HDI 2007-08 – 0.527 (11th Rank) - Including Small states like Delhi, Sikkim,

Pondicherry• India HDI Score – 0.467 – Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & (surprisingly) J&K

are the only other Large states that have a higher HDI compared to Gujarat in2007-08

2001 2007-08

IMR

• IMR has come down from 60 to 41. This points to an improved healthcare systemin the state

• It has dropped to 37 in 2012

MMR

MALNUTRITION

• When compared to other states, Gujarat performs exceptionally well• The comparison of malnutrition between 2007 and 2012 throws up interesting

facts. Gujarat has almost halved the number of malnourished children• However, the number is still high and government is working to get this

number down to single digit

POVERTY REDUCTION

GROWTH IN INEQUALITY

• Change in Lorenz Ratio denotes the change in inequality between rich and thepoor (i.e. Wealth distribution)

• Gujarat has seen ZERO change in rural areas, whereas the same in Urban areasis 5%

• India & the most literate state Kerala performs much worse

REMARKS

• There is a huge scope for improvement in these numbers in the future.

• Unfortunately, 2007-08 results for HDI came out in 2011. A lot of water has flown

under the bridge since then (5 years of Modi rule have passed since then and

thus the scope for improvement is much better in the next report (2012 report

should be out in 2014/15)

• Malnutrition which is often hyped to show that Gujarat has not developed, has

seen a huge drop of close to 50%

SEX RATIO AT BIRTH

• Gujarat sees a significant improvement in Sex-ratio at birth. This can beattributed to various government policies that have strictly clamped down onRadiology clinics which determined sex of featus

LITERACY RATE

• Close to 80% literacy rate in Gujarat compared to 74% for India• Add to it almost 70% schools that have computer, compared to 22% pan-India• Source: Census Data and Indian & Gujarat Government Data

WOMEN LITERACY RATE

SCHOOL DROP-OUT RATE

• Shows the emphasis on primary education by the state government. Once thefoundation is in place during these formative years, it will help in improvingdrop-out rates for higher education as well.

SINGLE TEACHER SCHOOL

• Again, emphasises the fact that government if focussed on promoting qualityeducation at all levels

• Multiple teachers in one school (even small villages) helps in improving qualityof education and does not lead to students missing classes in case teacher isunavailable due to any reason

• Power generation has gone up by almost 4.5 times in the last 10 years• Surplus power which is then sold to other states• 100% villages have electricity

• FIRST LARGE STATE to have 100% Rural electrification

EXCELLENCE IN POWER SECTOR
