Governor appoints Chancellor Harris toIndiana Automotive Council

Governor Mitch Daniels appointed Indiana UniversityKokomo Chancellor Michael Harris to serve on theIndiana Automotive Council (IAC) - a newly formedgroup of automotive experts to enhance, grow, andpromote the automotive industry in Indiana.

This group met for the first time on Wednesday, August31, to begin discussions on specific action itemsincluding how to strengthen the competitiveness of thestate in the global automotive marketplace. The ultimategoal is to stimulate long-term job creation and capitalinvestment and to make Indiana known as the automotivestate of tomorrow.

"Indiana University Kokomo is an essential partner inthe success of Indiana's economy," Gov. Daniels said ina letter to Harris. "Hoosiers need an industry-ledinitiative, in partnership with government anduniversities like Indiana University."

The IAC is a collaboration between industry,government, and higher education - a concept also knowas the "Triple Helix", which Harris introduced at aregional mayor's summit held on campus on July 6 andduring his testimony to the legislative study committeeon higher education and economic development.

Other businesses and industries represented on the IACinclude Allison Transmission Inc., Chrysler Group LLC,Cummins Inc., Indiana Economic DevelopmentCorporation, and Delphi Electronics and Safety.

The IAC plans to meet again within the next four to sixweeks.
