What are the conventions of a magazine? There

are many conventions of a magazine these being :

Pull quotes , Sell Lines , Mastheads, Skyline, Pugs ,

Barcodes etc. with out these conventions you

would not achieve what a magazine is expected to

look like however these are the simplistic sides of

conventions for a magazine as many magazine

now cover many of their own conventions to make

their magazine seem different and unique in

Page 3: Evaluation [autosaved]

comparison to other magazines of their genre in

the magazine market an example of this is the

idea of including todays most used social

networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook

on the Front cover and DPS of the magazine I

did this on my own magazine .

…….

Page 4: Evaluation [autosaved]

…….

I used the social networking sites Twitter and

Facebook as it was my idea of a different USP to gain

more readers making my magazine available online

as well as in your nearest convenient store ( G&M

magazine is only a click away) ; this convention the

usage of social networking

Page 5: Evaluation [autosaved]

has been used by modern genre magazines

such as Hip Hop and Rock magazines although I

went that step further and decided to add in a

QR code in which Blackberry smart phones can

use to scan and watch the Chilli interview on

their phones on the go .

MUSIC MAGAZINE FRONT COVER

Masthead in a bold, burgandy font a very fashionable font worn during the 90’s era. I had chose to call my magazine ‘G&M’ for the simple fact of it not just being based on 90’s musical sensations but also the fashion trend set as this was just as important to the music during the 90’s .

I decided to put my main image on a neutral rose pink background to focus the readers attention to the image ; The casual jeans shirt , bandana and extension braids reflects the genre of the magazine.

Colour Scheme: Rose pink, Grey and burgundy quite and subtle colours.

FOUND ON THE BOTTOM LEFT OF MY FRONT COVER IT IS NOT VERY

BIG HOWEVER IS FOUND IN A SIMILAR AREA ON A LOT OF MAGAZINES ; THE BARCODE INDICATES THE PRICE PER

MONTHLY ISSUE £4.99.

A Selling Line is a meaning to an end meaning to an end this will give me benefits over time to a greater degree than my competition magazine covering the same genre.

• They link my magazine name to a benefit.

• They have the magic of people talk.

• They drive executions- they suggest visuals or situations that give continuity to the advertising.

• THE SELL LINE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!

I have placed my sub stories on the left hand and right had side of my magazine front cover telling the reader what page they will find each story on .

EDITORS IMAGE- THE EDITORS IMAGE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE TEXT THIS BEING IT IS NICE TO SEE THE PERSON BEHIND THE WORDS . THE READERS BEHIND THE MAGAZINE MAY FEEL THEY HAVE THINGS IN COMMON WITH THE EDITOR AND CREATE A READER/WRITERS RELATIONSHIP AND BECOME FREQUENT BUYERS OF THE G&M MAGAZINE.

Editors Address

MY EDITORS ADDRESS IS MORE SO INFORMAL THAN THIS BEING BECAUSE MY GENRE IS THE 90’S THEREFORE I DECIDED TO INPUT THE 90’S SLANG INTO MY FOR IT TO APPEAL TO A 90’S MUSIC LOVER AUDIENCE AND ALSO APPEAR MORE REALISTIC TO MY CHOSDN GENRE.

Page 16: Evaluation [autosaved]

I HAD ORIGINALLY CREATED MY DOUBE PAGE SPREAD ON MICROSOFT WORD HOWEVER UNFORTUENTLY FINIDNG OUT I COULD IMPLICATE MY PROTOTYPE THE SAME WAY I HAD ON MICROSOFT WORD AS I HAD TO MAKE SURE MY MAIN ARTICLE STRETCHED ACROSS BOTH SIDES OF THE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD I THEREFORE HAD TO LOSE TWO OF MY ADVERTISEMENTS AND INSTEAD ONLY INCLUDE ONE WITH A PRIMARY IMAGE OF MYSELF POSED AS AN PROFFESSIONAL 90’S HAIR STYLIST.

HERE I HAVE TAKEN A PRIMARY IMAGE WITH MY CAMERA USING THE GREEN SCREEN TO GET A PROFFESSIONAL IMAGE THAT I COULD LATER ON EDIT AND IMPLIMENT ONTO MY FINAL

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD.

HERE IS A DRAFT OF MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD WHEN CREATING MY DRAFT I WAS

NOT INTENDING ON LEAVING MY BACKGROUND GREY AS IT

IS NOT A VERY EYE ATTRACTIVE COLOUR

HOWEVER I WAS STILL UNSURE OF MY LAYOUT.

HERE IS MY FINAL DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD I HAD USED THE PHOOTOSHOP TOOL

BARS TO CHANGE MY BACKGROUND TO AN

APPETISING POMEFGRANATE RED WITH THE SUN

BRIGHTENED TEXT AND MY MAIN IMAGE CENTERED ON MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD.

My Magazine has a target audience of the teenage

youth and young adults age 16-25 years old I had

chose to use this age group from looking on my

questionnaire results being their age group was more

interested in the 90’s R&B genre music in comparison

to adults 25+ I implicated this by using two 17 year

old sixth from students on my front cover also

Page 22: Evaluation [autosaved]

with the background contrast being of quite a youthful

colour (rose pink) as this colour would not necessarily be

seen on a magazine with a audience of 25 + . I chose to

not just focus on the music aspect of the 90’s but also

the fashion as most young women share a keen interest

in it by adding a fashion aspect I thought this could open

up more doors for my magazine as I can then appeal to a

wider audience

I will distribute my magazine in many ways in order

to get a continuous growing number of an audience ;

firstly I will put magazines in various retail shops such

as Newsagents,Conveniant Stores, HMV this is quite

commonly with most magazines as most people if

they want a magazine they would go to the nearest

shop with in their captivated

Page 24: Evaluation [autosaved]

area however today the big chains such as Tesco ,

Asda , Sainsbury's etc. are now becoming the popular

sellers of magazines. Distributing my magazine in

supermarkets means I will be able to reach more

people who fit into my audience however considering

the audience my magazine is aimed

…….

…….

16-24 year olds most 16-24 year olds are either

working in college or university and are familiar with

the new and latest technology and spend most of

their time on the internet doing research and other

things therefore I would also like to make visual

Page 26: Evaluation [autosaved]

copies of my magazine accessible over the internet

for my audience by doing this I will most defiantly be

keeping up with the competition of other magazines

as other magazines have also decided to do this

although not so much with in the UK which means I

will be the first to make a difference in the UK

magazine industry.

………..

Page 27: Evaluation [autosaved]

In the UK there are major magazine publishing

companies such as Emap, IPC media , National

magazine company , Conde and Dennie . I will also

appeal to these magazine publishing companies and

ask them to help me in becoming one of the next

popular magazines in the UK.

My demographic age for my magazine is 16-24 years

decided from doing survey research on different age

demographics to see which age demographic best

suits my genre being 90’s music and fashion.

Page 29: Evaluation [autosaved]

Having a young age demographic such as this means I

am able to reach my audience using different types of

media and communication such as social networking

as well as the obvious of local news agents and

supermarket stores this gives me a great advantage of

gaining a wide audience as well as buyers ; I have also

decided to make my magazine available online to read

payments made using credit/debit visa cards.

The Sub-Stories- The sub stories which my readers

will find most interesting is those which were not

published during the 90’s due to confidentiality

however from doing interviews /getting in touch

with the 90’s sensational artists we were able to

get hold of stories which have never been told

before .

Page 32: Evaluation [autosaved]

Despite my audience being of a young age 16- 25 , most

females at this age tend to be very mature and prone to

the adult world, to show this I have used a simplistic but

yet sophisticated font with a calm mood colour of

burgundy I chose however not to cover some of my main

image with the Mast head as some magazines do as I

want my main image to remain the MAIN focus as part of

being the exclusive of the magazine.

………..

Page 33: Evaluation [autosaved]

Main image – The main image is a mid shot of the

duet group TLS they are looking directly at the reader

screaming ‘BUY ME!’, many magazines do this as it is

eye catching also the attire which they are wearing

most definitely connotes to the 90’s R&B casual

clothing.

I have learnt to use different types of creative media

software's to help with the process of creating my

final music magazine ; such as Photoshop and blog

spot I used Photoshop to help edit my final images

and text for my Front Cover, Contents Page and

Double page spread images and make creative text

to fit my own house style magazine genre

Page 35: Evaluation [autosaved]

……

. I had found using Photoshop very difficult at first as I

had never used this software before however it was

worthwhile using as it helped provide and create an

professional look in appose to my prototype which

was created on Microsoft publisher and Microsoft

word.

Page 36: Evaluation [autosaved]

……

When using blogger.com for the first time I had a

little experience before hand embedding images links

and music as I did this when creating my own website

In GCSE I.T which I thought would give me a great

advantage when coming to make my own blog

however this was not so simple as making

Page 37: Evaluation [autosaved]

…….

the blog was not all about embedding images and

texts onto my blog but instead

understanding/developing my understanding of

media and being able to meet all task deadlines

which I did in fact have problems with as I struggled

with some of the tasks set however the outcome was

worth it as

Page 38: Evaluation [autosaved]

……..

I am now familiar with different software's and

different approaches such as ‘Blogger’ to put across

ideas and information for others to read .

Page 39: Evaluation [autosaved]

When doing my preliminary task I was very clueless as to

what software would best suit the creating of a magazine

and as to what content needs to be included in order to

make it seem and look like a well presented and thought

about magazine. For my preliminary task I indeed decided to

use the software's which I have had previously used in other

courses and subjects as I was very familiar with these ;

these software's being Microsoft word, power point ,

publisher .

Page 40: Evaluation [autosaved]

…….

I also used Microsoft excel to collate together my results

from my age demographic survey this helped me by giving

me ideas of what 90’s music and fashion lovers would like to

see in a magazine orientated only around the 90’s era.
