EvaluationWhat kind of media institution might

distribute your media product and why?

Style ModelsIn creating my magazine I used a few different style models to inspire the style and influence the layout.

The reason I chose these brands is because they all represent a similar target audiences. They all cover a similar range in music. If I created an original magazine that had similar demographics, it would be worth looking into their publishing houses and researching the big names in the industry.

NME is published by IPC Media, which is a subsidiary of Time Inc. They are a large publishing house based in the UK that distribute a variety of different magazines. Alongside NME, they also distribute UNCUT. They are both under the Men’s Entertainment section, suggesting they’re subscribers are majority male.

Bauer Media Group is a multinational media group, based in Germany. They publish both Q and MOJO. They also own Kerrang, having a strong foothold in the music magazine industry. Q and Mojo are both listed under mensentertainment, again suggesting a similar demographic to mine. Mojo is the most similar in terms of music genre and format, however, Mojo is aimed at middle aged men, whereas my INDY magazine has a young/teenage (16 – 21) audience.

Who do I pick?

Publishing houses tend to dominate particular markets, this is shown by both Bauer and Time Inc.’s music magazine: Nme, Q, Mojo, Uncut. It would make sense that one of these companies published my magazine, considering the similarities in genre/style.

A company like vibe media, which publishes RnB magazines, would not publish my magazine. This is because that would be taking a big risk. People may not accept a new Indie Rock magazine from the renowned RnB company.

ADVERTISING

A vital portion of the money made from magazines comes from advertising. The adverts seen in magazines are very important; they are tailored to the magazine’s target audience. The publisher knows its audience inside out and so can effectively get companies to pay them to feature their ads. This links to a company’s tendency to monopolize one genre. They have a established and trusted relationship with the advertisers. They know they can rely on them to feature their ads, whereas they would have to start from scratch, establishing knew connections, if they wanted to created a new genre magazine.

BAUERI think in the end I would pick Bauer. They are well established in the industry (the audience won’t have a problem with them publishing a new indie rock magazine.)I feel that my magazine represents a similar audience to MOJO, but a younger version of that demographic. It would make sense for Bauer to reach out to the younger audience in order to make a profit. They already dominate that section of the music/media magazine industry and have trusted connections with relevant advertisers; in order to further capitalize on it, they’d want a magazine like ‘INDY’ to increase their portfolio.
