Aims for today

• Find out about the successes of connect:transmit, and what it means for our organisations

• Start a conversation in the region between community radio stations and educational and youth organisations

• Learn about how each sector can benefit from working together

• Over 200 stations in UK• Licence requires stations

to deliver ‘social gain’• Diverse, community-

focused, gives voice to local people (often seldom heard), cross-section of the community

What is community radio?

What is connect:transmit?• Using community radio to develop young

people’s speaking & listening skills• 4 community radio stations (+ Radio

Regen)– BCB (Bradford)– Preston FM (Preston)– Future Radio (Norwich)– Shmu FM (Aberdeen)

• All worked differently, with different groups

• Funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation

Outcomes of connect:transmit• 90% improved in speaking & listening skills; 65%

enhanced their community awareness• Biggest S&L increase was in ‘confidence’, followed by

‘adapting talking’ and ‘communicating clearly’• Results suggest project was most effective with

disadvantaged young people• CR staff/trainers enhanced their knowledge of working

with young people, and funding landscape• Developed relationships between CR stations and

educational/youth organisations

1. Community radio demonstrably works to develop speaking & listening skills

2. Fruitful partnerships can be built between CR stations and educational (and other) organisations

3. Collaborative, partnership projects work to bring in funding for CR stations and youth projects
