I . An immigrant is a person who moves to another country and lives there.

a. An ethnic group is a group of people who have the same culture.

b. People in the same ethnic group speak the same language, eat the same foods, and

a. The fi rst thing many immigrants saw when they came to America was the Statue of

Liberty.

b. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of f reedom.

c. Many people living in America now have ancestors f rom Europe and other countries.

I . I mmigrants came to America many years ago f rom other countries all over the world.

b. They are expected to f ollow the law.

I . Children of immigrants went to school in the United States.

a. These schools were very diff erent f rom the schools they lef t.

b. Children learn about the government of the United States and the way of lif e.

c. They learn to speak English and about Science and Math.

I I . I mmigrants brought the customs of their culture with them when they moved to

America.

a. People in America played games, sang songs, and ate f oods that came f rom other

countries.

b. Cultures f rom diff erent places started to blend with American customs.

I . At the same time immigrants were moving to America f rom other countries, people

were migrating in America.

a. The Great Migration was when Af rican Americans moved f rom the Southern states

to the Northern States.

b. They were hoping to fi nd a better lif e af ter slavery.

c. They looked f or jobs in f actories in New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh.

d. J ust like immigrants f rom other countries, they brought their culture with them

and it blended with the culture of the Northern states.
