Rory, who is a resident musician in Charlie’s Bar in Puerto del Carmen, was joined for the song by a Sen- egalese native, nicknamed ‘Jimmy Barry Murphy’ after the Cork hurling manager, who portrayed an uncanny knack of naming a host of towns and villages from the four All-Ireland semi-final- ists, Donegal, Dublin, Cork and Mayo. Here in October Gallagher had hoped ‘Jim- my’ would be able to join him for the tour, but it now seems the new anthem could be “Jimmy’s missing match- es!” Despite the assistance of North-West MEP Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher, his friend was unable to get a visa ahead of the final at such short no- tice but the latest information is that should Donegal win the ultimate prize, “Jimmy” will be here in October. Rory said, “Jimmy flew to Madrid to the Embassy of Senegal in hope of being able to do the paperwork from there but was advised he has to return to Senegal to obtain the visa required. “I am totally gutted. New research released at the weekend has shown the growing problem of illegal cigarettes in Donegal with over one in three cigarettes in Letterkenny being non Irish duty paid (NIDP). The figure of 33.9% was well above the national average of 29.8% and placed Letterkenny fifth high- est of the 22 towns and cities that were surveyed by MS In- telligence for the second quar- ter of 2012. The highest level of ille- gal cigarettes was found in Waterford which had a 44.5% level of NIDP with Newbridge in Kildare coming in behind with 41.5%. A spokesperson for Irish To- bacco Manufacturers Adviso- ry Committee (ITMAC) said; “The figures are certainly worrying when you look at the incidence over the past two years. The NIDP reached one of its lowest rates in the same period last year and this was following the governments freeze on excise on cigarettes and the increased focus put on the area by the Revenue and Gardai. However follow- ing the government’s increase in the VAT and Excise in the last budget pushing the price of a packet of 20 cigarettes to over €9 there has been a surge in the amount of NIDP ciga- rettes on the streets.” NEWS
