More RAM and better processorsOne of the most recent rumors is that Apple will add an additional 1 GB of RAM to the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus (of course, the name isn’t confirmed), up from its current 2 GB. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the new iPhone Plus will receive more RAM, but 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will remain at 2 GB. Both phones are likely to receive a new A10 processor, which will be made exclusively by Taiwan Semiconductor, according to China Times. Image credit: Apple.

New, thinner designEvery two years the iPhone typically undergoes a redesign, and the iPhone 7 will likely follow suit. The next iPhone is expected to be thinner than the current versions, with Kuo saying it will be between 6mm and 6.5 mm thick — compared to the current 7.1mm and 7.3mm. Apple is supposedly working on a non-metal frame, and possibly waterproof and dust-proof features as well, according to Mac Otakara. Image credit: Apple.

Apple is considering putting an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display into the next iPhone, instead of the LCD displays it has used in the past. Samsung is rumored as a possible display supplier, according to ETNews. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster thinks a sapphire display is also a possibility for the next iPhone. And Mac Otakara believes Apple will go back to a glass-on-glass display and remove the bezels, which would push the screen to the edges of the device.

No home buttonMunster also believes that there’s a 50% chance the next iPhone won’t have a home button, and that the Touch ID sensor will be moved elsewhere on the phone. While that’s a possibility, AppleInsider says this isn’t likely to happen until 2017.

There have been plenty of rumors that Apple will resurrect a 4-inch version of its iPhone, and Kuo believes that this will finally happen in 2016. The device (referred to as the 6c or 7c) would sport a metal casing and A9 processor, but won’t have a 3D Touch display.

Smaller, 4-inch version

Apple has launched its new iPhones in September for four consecutive years, but that could change in 2016. The latest rumor from AppleInsider says that the iMaker is considering an earlier iPhone launch, though we don’t know exactly how early. Apple debuted the first four generations of the iPhone in June and July, and could possibly revert to that schedule.
