A List of Android Advertising NetworksDue to its rapid growth, combined with its more open nature, the Android OS has become by some measures the single biggest platform for in-app mobile advertising. In Q4 of last year, the number of ad impressions on Android smartphone devices finally surpassed those of Apple’s iPhone – according to the Opera Mediaworks ad network. As the chart below shows, Android now accounts for 36% of mobile ad impressions compared to 29% for iOS:

The growing Android advertising market has been driven in part by the ability of ad networks to develop new and innovative ad formats using some of the flexibility provided by the Android platform.  However, since Google updated their Play Store Developer Content policy in September last year, Android app advertisers and developers have been forced to adapt their strategies and look at other ways of ensuring the revenue keeps flowing – while also making sure they are following Google’s new set of rules. Specifically, the policy update last year changed the formats of ads that are acceptable on the Play Store – the biggest and most important of these were Push Notification Ads and Icon Ads.

So what have Android advertising networks done to combat the changes in policy on the Google Play Store? The answer is they have been developing new ad formats and solutions to try and make up for the loss. Ad networks such as mobileCore have new native ad formats that aim to bring the revenue to the developers, while minimising the disruption for mobile users. Others like AppKey make use of a widget that integrates with the developer’s app and coexists with the interstitials, in-app-purchases and more. LeadBolt has started to find new success from their Audio Ads, with CTRs of 30%. While Widdit has seen a 20% increase in sign-ups since the policy change.

One of the strengths of Android is the sheer number of different ad networks in operation which has been a major factor driving innovation and new format development. However, keeping track of all the latest new Android ad platforms can be a challenge and there are new ones popping up all the time with fresh SDKs and ad format solutions. Unless you’re hooked into the various Android developer and mobile advertising communities it can be hard to identify all these new players and opportunities. Here we’ve assembled a list of the best networks that are helping Android advertisers and app developers keep the clicks and revenue flowing.
