When Google changes its algorithm there
are plenty of new traffic products that come
out and some of them say that content
marketing is dead.
In fact I remember seeing one sales page
suggesting that Google no longer wants
new content – there's too much of it!
Content marketing is definitely not dead
and here's why.
The more changes Google makes the
better for those who write content for their
visitor.
So many people wrote content based on
search engine optimization and
manipulating where they would appear in the searches.
Keywords, back links, tags, etc. All these
things could be added to make your
website appear higher up the search
engines.
Lots of people did this and in turn
Google found out more and more
about how their system could be
manipulated and what loop holes
there were.
As soon as they found them they
would update the algorithm and get
rid of the weeds.
Over time it has meant that those who
write content for visitors have seen less and
less competition for showing up in the
search engines.
Is it a lot of work? Well, yes, but your traffic grows with time
and remains.
If you take a look at Google search trends
you will see the following:
Back linkingThe interest in back linking has increased
over time and peaked at the end of 2011
and beginning of 2012.
Since then peoples interest has decreased rapidly.
People know that anything they do to
manipulate the number of back links to
their website will be detected by Google
and their site will be penalized.
Keyword optimizationThe same can be seen with the trend
for the search term keyword
optimization.
In this case there has been a gradual
decrease since 2007.
Google has made it clear that
keywords don't mean anything – it's
now about keyword phrases and
overall meaning of your content.
Content marketingIf we look at the trend for content
marketing then we see something very
interesting.
1. This has always been more popular
than the 2 search trends above, so
there has always been a lot more
interest in this topic.
2. Since 2012 there has been an
increase in this search trend and a
steep increase during 2013.
Content marketing is becoming more and
more popular because marketers are at last
realising that quality content is what Google
is looking for because that is what people
are searching for.
Content that answers their question or
search query.
Does this mean there is now more
competition? Well, in reality only the minority
of marketers are prepared to make the
effort to write quality content.
Are you one of them? If not then I
believe you are making a mistake.
The sooner you start the better or
you will have a lot of catching up
to do!
