THE{FULL} LIFE TOUCHMARK AT ALL SAINTS May 2014 Family tradition brews love Irish coffee. It’s the sweet, warm taste of family tradition for Diane and Gail Kristensen. The St. Patrick’s Day celebratory tradition began shortly after the couple married in 1961. “Since Diane’s birthday is March 17, it just seemed appropriate to join in with the St. Patrick’s Day festivities,” says Gail. The birthday tradition extended its Irish flair, as Diane, who always has been a collector of fine china, added a Shelly Company shamrock piece to her collection each year. By the 1980s, her ever-expanding collection of shamrock china allowed for an increase in their party invitation list. And, of course, they shared their love of Irish coffee. How to make Gail and Diane’s Superb Irish Coffee 1. Fill mug about 2/3 full of hot, dark roast coffee. 2. Add sugar cubes and/or brown sugar. Stir slightly. 3. Add 1/2 to 1 ounce, as desired, Irish Whiskey and/or Bailey’s Irish Cream. 4. Top with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. 5. Top with a shake of cinnamon dust and a drizzle of crème de menthe. 6. Serve with scones with Devonshire cream or soda bread.

Helen Anderson (left) shows Touchmark team member Sue Zastrow her ceramic glazed egg and talks about the process. “I was excited to see my ceramic piece after it was fired in the kiln,” says Helen, who joined other residents for an art class on making the eggs. Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Randy Austin taught the group how to use packaging string to create unique designs. “I love doing ceramics and creating different pieces for my home.” says Helen.

{COLOR}FULL Living—How does your garden grow?

Master gardeners are some of the most passionate, knowledgeable, and committed people I have ever met. They spend hours learning all the pros and cons of which plants need to go where. They assess soil, sun, and shade needs as well as overall balance for the environment and success for the garden. They dig in and plant—usually in their own terrain and often in the community—for a variety of causes and commitments that serve neighborhoods, cities, citizens, and wildlife and environmental goals. ...

CAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS

The Greig Chorus performed in The All Saints Chapel to a full crowd of 60-plus residents and guests. Named after the Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Greig, various members of the group have been performing since 1936. For their Touchmark performance, they performed songs in Norwegian and Swedish as well as English. Touchmark resident Garrit Van Den Top (pictured third from right, back row) is part of the group.

Pass around the instruments, please! For a recent Irish Happy Hour, Friends of Traditional Music members Tom Parliman (left) and Bill Peterson performed. Tom played an electronic bagpipe, the mandolin, and an Irish drum (called the bodhrán). Bill played the fiddle and read an Irish poem before performing. The duo shared lilting Irish melodies while residents enjoyed green beer, assorted wines, and traditional Irish appetizers.
