Why send email?

✓ 2.9 Billion people use email

✓ Who do you know that isn't regularly checking their emails?

✓ Allow people to unsubscribe - that’s a good thing - you want a healthy list with people interested in what you have got to say. Customers that flag and set your email to spam will hurt your chances of delivering successful email

How do you send email?

✓ Today it’s incredible easy for you to send mass email using a software or a web service such as AWeber, Campaign Monitor or MailChimp. These are some of the popular ones but there are many others

✓ They all do the same thing thing however - they send email reliably to what is known as your list.

✓ Generally the bigger the list the better - but you want a quality list.

✓ That is people that are interested in what you have got to say and may intent to eventually buy or have bought from you

✓ You can buy lists of thousands of people, some of these may be effective but generally they are of poor quality.

✓ If you want to buy a list, start off small and cheap and test to see what response you get from emails. It’s likely to be poor however.

Open Rate

✓ Open rate - this is the percentage of people (you guessed it) that opens your emails - compared to the people that don’t

✓ Don’t expect everyone to open your email - if you get an open rate of over 60% thats absolutely brilliant.

✓ The average open rate is around 25% - that’s only 1 in 4 emails actually being opened.

✓ Send regular email - if they haven't heard from you in a while thats not a good thing.

✓ It’s time consuming and hard to produce great content, so:

✓ Putting it on your blog AND email address is acceptable

✓ You can either duplicate it in your email or simply link to the content on your site.

✓ It’s about the value of what you are putting out there - email and your website are just TOOLs to deliver that great content, service and or product.

✓ Add people you know, people that you know in a personal and business context are unlikely to mind that you are emailing them - they can of course unsubscribe.

✓ Ask the question what’s in it for me - and answer the question with regards to your audience. Why would people sign up?

✓ Entice people to want to hear from you - they really want to hear what you have got to say - write great content.

✓ Give away something great in exchange for your their email address. This works wonders in comparison to “sign up to our newsletter.” What’s in it for me?

✓ Giveaways, Webinars, Competitions are all ways of increasing the size of your list.

✓ 1.) It’s not regular enough. Some people send every day. That’s not a bad thing - it’s all about what your audience wants. If you are delivering value then every day is fine.

✓ 2.) It’s sell, sell, sell. You want to build a healthy relationship

✓ By using the rule of reciprocity - give and you shall receive over the long run is a great marketing technique.

✓ Some stats say it takes an average customer 21 touches to buy from you.
