1. Sewing Thread Choice Thread is a more complex topic than most believe. The way a sewing thread is constructed or spun effects its strength and smoothness when used for sewing. 2. Cotton thread is used for general stitching and top stitching. Cotton is spun into thread from fibers from thecotton spool. The fibers range from short, medium, and extralong lengths which determine the strength. 3. Silk, Polyester, and Rayon are also commonly used for quilting. Silk thread will work well with natural and man-made fabrics because of its elasticity and strength as a filament. 4. Nylon monofilament is not normally used for high quality quilts, but is often used in mass production for moderately priced quilts. 5. Thread choice makes a difference, so choose wisely, keeping in mind what the finished project will be and what effect you want to make 6.
