WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

Founded in 2013, Russia Direct features original reporting as well as fresh writing from a wide variety of experts from both Russia and around the world who deliver insight often missing from today’s media landscape.

This Russian-U.S. initiative was started in cooperation with the Foreign Policy Group, which continues to provide promotional, research, consulting and distribution support.

We believe in expert-to-expert dialogue and are creating a community of Russian and international academics, business leaders, experts and decision-makers who want to see the relationship between Russia and the West improve.

Dominic’s work with all things Russian has in-cluded a stint as a business consultant in Mos-cow, a marketing consultant for Russia’s tech sector, a financial adviser in Kiev, and a role with the press operations team at the Sochi 2014 Olympics. He found his way to Russia Direct as a way to tie together his media, technology and Russian business experiences.

“Russia Direct is all about improving the U.S.-Russian relationship by showing that reason, logic and a pinch of humor are more powerful than propaganda in winning over hearts and minds.”

It’s Pavel’s journalistic background, interest in public diplomacy and belief in well-balanced jour-nalism that brought him to Russia Direct. As a former exchange student in the U.S. with extensive reporting experience, he perceives himself as a confirmed nerd who knows how to tackle arcane topics on geopolitics and domestic policy and present them in an interest-ing way.

“Personal chemistry between Russians and Americans does exist. And Russia Direct knows how to maintain that chemistry on a safe level in order not to explode the laboratory.”

DOMINIC BASULTO, Executive Editor, U.S.

PAVEL KOSHKIN,Executive Editor, Russia

Ksenia’s exposure to international cultures began at an early age. Starting with learning Hindi at school, she found her way into the field of international relations. Living in the UK and traveling all over Europe helped Ksenia develop an understanding of how Russia is perceived in the West. After working at the Voice of Russia, Ksenia believed Russia Direct was the best place to contribute to the global debate on Russia.

“We tackle bias on a daily basis. Bringing experts to the table is what will help us build a long-term relationship.”

Alexey worked his way to Russia Direct from the sunny cities of Damascus, Aleppo, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Cairo and Budapest, where he lived, worked and did his Ph.D. research. He continued his international relations studies in Minnesota and Washington, DC. His experience in diverse environments has earned him a ‘human degree’ in multicultural communication.

“Russia Direct doesn’t hesitate to present different perspectives and viewpoints. To some they are so diametrically different that they call us U.S. and Kremlin propaganda simultaneously.”

KSENIA ZUBACHEVA, Managing Editor

ALEXEY KHLEBNIKOV, Senior Editor

EDITOR`S NOTE

THE CRUCIAL NEED TO KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOINGAll of our reports tackle vibrant topics and are written by some of the best foreign affairs analysts from Russia, Europe and Asia. We endeavor to find a healthy balance between established experts and young promising analysts to provide a diverse range of insights and introduce our readers to fresh perspectives.

We are confident that our reports have the kind of information that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in Western media. According to multiple research studies, readers have told us time and time again that they would be willing to invest money in subscription-only content. And all of our research showed that there is high demand for the type of content Russia Direct produces.

Ekaterina’s drive for improving Russia-U.S. relations started in 2008 when she first vis-ited the U.S. As a well-read and well-traveled journalist, she felt a special responsibility for improving bilateral relations. Her experience as a Fulbright scholar in the U.S. in 2010-2012 helped her transition from reporting to editing and managing a team at Russia Direct.

“My favorite thing about Russia Direct is its team. It’s small but absolutely remark-able. Everybody is passionate about inter-national relations. Every day we learn from each other.”
