This report examines relationship between cleanliness, sewage and health of people. The quality of cleanliness and sewage is an important factor as it influences hygiene and therefore the public health. The purpose of the report is to decide whether sewage and cleanliness are in direct relation to health of people or not.

The study was conducted by taking a sample of 180 students of Army Institute of management, Kolkata. For the study hostel was divided into different barracks and on the basis of questionnaire filled by 180 students living in those barracks, the data was collected and analysed using chi-square, where :

Null hypothesis - THERE IS NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF SEWAGE & CLEANLINESS AND THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE.

And

Alternative hypothesis - THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF SEWAGE & CLEANLINESS AND THE HEALTH OF THE

PEOPLE.

The result of this test showed that the chi square calculated is greater than the tabulated value of chi square. Hence, the null hypothesis is rejected. This means there is a relationship between the condition of sewerage & cleanliness and the health of the people. Recommendations are also given for improvement in the current cleanliness and sewage condition at the end of report which will ultimately improve the health condition of students living in Army Institute of Management, Kolkata.

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of the Research was to study the condition of the people of society in response to the sewage and cleanliness of the blocks in which they live. This research was also important to check whether people living in good conditions have good health or not. This could also help the administration to come to the point that they can do some improvement in the living conditions of the people.

The other purpose was to know how many people are working for the cleanliness of the rooms and how many people are exactly living and this could help us to know how many more people can be allotted to the blocks for the cleanliness purpose.

DATA COLLECTION

Our Key Responsibility Area for the data collection was the Students at Army Institute of Management, Kolkata. The data collected was through few questions in the form of a Questionnaire.

We approached the students of this institute on a personal basis. There were around 6 different blocks in the Institute each comprising of 10 rooms having 3 members in each room.

The questionnaire consisted of questions relating to:Problems of sewage

Steps taken by institute to avoid these problems & to improve cleanliness

No of students suffering from diseases.

How much satisfied are the students with the efforts of the Institute??

Any suggestions from their side to have a healthy surrounding.

All this data was used for the hypothesis testing analysis using CHI-Square Test to determine if there existed a relationship between the condition of sewage and health of the people.

There are 38% people who are living in good sewage and cleanliness and 62% in poor sewage and cleanliness condition.

DATA ANALYSIS USING HYPOTHESIS TESTING

TO KNOW THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF SEWAGE & CLEANLINESS AND THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE.

NULL HYPOTHESIS: THERE IS NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF SEWAGE & CLEANLINESS AND THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE.

ALTERNATE HYPOTHESIS: THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF SEWAGE & CLEANLINESS AND THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE.

Since the chi square calculated > chi square tabulated, therefore the null hypothesis is rejected.

It means there is a relationship between the condition of sewage & cleanliness and the health of the people.

RECOMMENDATION

In improving the sewer system the following things can be kept in mind, these improvements include

sewer main replacement and repairs

sewer lining and the installation of relief sewers

All of these improvements are intended to reduce flooding and betterment of health of the people.

Sewer repairs include replacement of deteriorated sewer mains and defective sewer service connections.

Repairs focuses on sewers which shows signs of collapse, excessive cracking, voids or gaps between pipes, and faulty service connections. Often

times, sewer main repairs are necessary to prepare a sewer pipe for sewer lining.

Sewer lining is a non-invasive technique to rehabilitate sewers by eliminating infiltration, structural defects and root intrusion. Sewer lining does not require

excavation or disruption to traffic. It is a cost-effective process.

Moreover we have to make sure that the sewer are properly covered and are cleaned time and again by authorities.

CONCLUSION

Based upon the analysis run on 180 students divided in 6 blocks which were further divided on the basis of cleanliness and the level of sewage which is given below:-

diseases

Good sewerage3280112and cleanliness

Poor sewerage and422668cleanliness

After the analysis on the basis of chi-square, the following conclusions were made:-

People living with good sewage and clean conditions are less prone to diseases and vice-versa.

This also means that sewage and cleanliness has a direct relationship with health of people.

Therefore, importance for maintaining good living conditions as far as cleanliness and sewage are concerned should be given high priority.

Because performance depends directly on the health condition of the person as it will reduce absenteeism which is a very vital factor for performance of a student.
