Oh how I long for the days when you could strategically plan, get everything ready, execute and review. Nowdays as a marketer you need to be fluid, agile and razor sharp. The pace of digital communications today is so fast, obessing about having everything right before you launch or commence a campaign means that they will never be right as someone will bring a new comms method to market, social media platforms will change rules (or make it more expensive) or there will be a news item that everyone has their attention turned towards. But don’t throw all your strategic thinking out the window. Planning to make your reaction to this changing environment swift, smart while still moving towards your goals is achievable. Its the principle of adaptation – taking advantage of changes and opportunities you can’t predict, that will make you successful. Its a huge challenge which means that marketers need to be across all business departments to pinpoint where the story, ie that advantage can come. For example, most of the businesses I work with don’t have the capacity to be trend makers – they are trend & news followers. I’m always on the lookout for trends and news opportunities that these businesses and organisations can ride the coat tail to leverage their marketing efforts. Being regional, it’s often preparing a local perspective on a national issue. Other times it may be a new product or service that isn’t quite ready to roll out – but the time is ripe to get the message out – and he who hesitates is lost. So stop procrastinating on your digital strategy. In 2015 start the process, learn from the results and then use your new skills to get better at it!
