The CBI is probing allegations thatarrested Chief Executive Officer of

Censor Board Rakesh Kumar alleged-ly milked a host of top film producersand stars before giving clearance tosome recently released films.

Top CBI sources said during theexamination of Kumar and two others, including an agent and an advisorypanel member of the Central Board ofFilm Certification, it surfaced thatsome top names in Bollywood includ-ing Shah Rukh Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala,Rohit Shetty, Vidya Balan and produc-tion house UTV had apparently paid

money to get their movies cleared intime with desired certification.

Though the probe into graft alle-gations against Kumar and two otheraccused persons in the case is confinedto the bribery case involving clearanceto a Chhattisgarh regional movie, theagency is also independently verifying

whether the claims of payment of bribeby Bollywood producers are correct andcarry any evidentiary value, the sources

said. The agency has not received anycomplaint from any Bollywood pro-ducer or director against Kumar.

“The common threat was to chopoff item songs. Clearance was delayedtill the last moment which made pro-ducers frantic and cough out illegal grat-ification to get the certificate before thescheduled release,” the sources said.

During sustained questioning of thetrio, the sleuths have gathered that pro-ducers of recently released movies likeKick, Singham Returns and Bobby Jasoos, starring top actors, allegedly paidmoney to get their films cleared , thesources said.

The agency had arrested Kumarfrom Mumbai on Monday night forallegedly demanding !70,000 as bribefor clearing a regional movie fromChhattisgarh. He was produced beforethe Special CBI court in Mumbaiwhich remanded him to three-day CBIcustody for further questioning.

History of sorts was createdin Telangana on Tuesday

with the Government con-ducting the biggest-ever inten-sive household survey on a sin-gle day and collecting data ofeach and every household in allthe ten districts.

Brushing aside the criticismby the Opposition and allega-tions that it is aimed at singlingout people from AndhraPradesh living in Hyderabad, the TRS Government embarked

on the massive exercise. In New Delhi, a senior

Home Ministry official said theCentral Government wasseized of the matter and keep-ing a close eye on the situationarising out of the survey that

has raised suspicion among thepeople of Seemandhra origin.

“Appropriate interventionwill be made by the HomeMinistry at an appropriate time,if necessary,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Greater

Hyderabad, the State Capitalwith a population of 12-mil-lion, wore a deserted look asnormally busy and congestedroads were empty. With just afew people and fewer vehicleson the roads, with shops, restaurants and hotels closed, acurfew-like situation prevailed.Right from the old city aroundCharminar to the Hitec City, the hub of information tech-nology, all the busy centreswere silent.

It is for the first time in thecountry that such a survey hasbeen conducted on a single dayto do away with the possibility ofany manipulation and distortionof data. An estimated 4,00,000enumerators, including Govern-ment employees, teachers, policemen and other volunteersbegan the house-to-house surveyin Hyderabad and other districtsearly in the morning.

Havaldar Gaya Prasad’s fam-ily will receive his body

with mixed feelings onWednesday. The soldier wasdeclared “missing dead” 18years ago while serving inSiachen Glacier and an Armypatrol found his body just threedays ago in a crevasse there.

His son is now inChandigarh to receive the bodyand take it for cremation totheir native village Kuraria inMainpuri district, UttarPradesh. The martyred soldierwill be given full military hon-ours, including a 21-gun salutewith senior military and districtofficials paying their respects.

Gaya Prasad of 15 RajputRegiment was deployed at ahigh altitude post near Kandhadrop zone in Siachen, the

world’s highest battlefield wherearmies of India and Pakistan aredeployed since 1984. He wentmissing while trying to recov-er supplies, including rationsdropped from a helicopter. Theofficials said most probablythe soldier fell into a crevasseand got buried in the snow.

The Army carried outextensive search and rescuemissions for days together. After it failed to find GayaPrasad, the Army finallydeclared him dead and a bat-

tle casualty. In military parlanceit means he died in action, which entitled his family to allbenefits including pension andother facilities.

However, the soldier’s bodywas found three days back by anArmy patrol in the northern partof Siachen Glacier close to theKandha drop zone. The patrolparty saw a hand jutting out ofthe snow and the body was thendug out, officials said adding itwas more or less intact due to theintense cold and snow.

The body was then shiftedon to a snow ledge and airlift-ed by a Cheetah Helicopter toSiachen base camp. After dueidentification, the soldier’s bodywas then airlifted to Leh andwill be flown to Chandigarh on

Wednesday. His son will thenreceive the body and take it totheir village. Prasad’s 90-year-old father reportedly said: “I can rest in peace once I seemy son’s body.”

Siachen Glacier, where

temperatures sometimes dip tominus 50 degree Celsius, has sofar claimed the lives of morethan 850 Indian soldiers sincethey were deployed there in1984. Most of the casualtieswere due to harsh weather anddangerous terrain includingcrevasses and deadly avalanch-es. The main reasons fordeaths are hypoxia and highaltitude pulmonary edema (or“altitude sickness” in moun-taineering lexicon).

Incidentally, the situation isthe same for the Pakistan Armyand reports indicate that near-ly 100 soldiers die on an aver-age every year. In one of theworst tragedies on April 7,2012, an avalanche hit a mili-tary camp situated at Giyarisector burying 129 Pakistanisoldiers and 11 civilians. Theirbodies are yet to be recovered.

Pushing India-Pakistan rela-tions into a deeper crisis,

Pakistani High CommissionerAbdul Basit went on to meetmore Kashimiri separatist lead-

ers on Tuesday. This comes aday after India called off theForeign Secretary-level talkswith Pakistan expressing dis-pleasure over Pakistan engag-ing the separatists.

Basit met All IndiaHurriyat Conference (M)leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, hardline separatist leader SyedAli Shah Geelani, and JKLF’sYasin Malik even as hundredsof people protested outside thePakistani High Commission.

During their meeting, the

separatists lauded Pakistan’seffort to involving separatists inthe talks. “We appreciated thatPakistan did not surrender toIndia’s dictatorship attitude,”said Syed Ali Shah Geelani.“We discussed that Pakistanmust impress upon India toimplement the UN resolutionit has signed on Kashmir.Kashmir is an occupied terri-tory. Let people of J&K decidetheir fate,” he added.

It is learnt that the sepa-ratists told Basit that they want to be party to the India-Pakistan talks. They also urged Pakistan to push India to resolve Kashmir issueimmediately.

Foreign Secretary SujathaSingh had on Monday cancelledher visit to Pakistan to holdtalks with her Pakistani coun-terpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhryafter Basit went ahead withmeeting separatists despiteSingh urging him to refrainfrom any such irritants. Indiatermed such acts unacceptableand “continued efforts to inter-fere” in its internal affairs. Thetalks, scheduled for August 25,were going to be the first diplo-matic contact between the twocountries after the newGovernment took over in India.

Pakistan had on Monday,in a relatively subdued tone, described India’s decision as asetback to its efforts to pro-mote good neighbourly rela-tions and claimed that holdingmeeting with separatists priorto talks has been its long-standing practice. However onTuesday, Islamabad said “itwas not subservient” to NewDelhi and that “Kashmir wasnot part of India”.

“Pakistan is not subservientto India. It is a sovereign coun-try and a legitimate stakehold-er in the Jammu & Kashmirdispute,” Pakistan ForeignOffice spokesperson TasnimAslam said in Islamabad whileasserting “Kashmir is not partof India. “ It is a disputed ter-ritory. There are numerousUN resolutions,” she said.

Hundreds of men andwomen fought for freedomwith their unfailing courageand endurance even to theextent of giving up their lives. The freedom movement washeaded by various stalwartsin the country.

Among the manydynamic and charismaticleaders, Mahatma Gandhiwas the most iconic leaderwho played a definite role inbringing the nation togetherwith his tool of non-violencethrough movements like thenon-ooperation movement,Purna Swaraj, CivilDisobedience Movement,Quit India Movement thatbrought India the long await-ed freedom. These nobleheroes, to whom India owesits Independence, had accessto education. Educationmade them aware of the

world history, various civilrights and freedom move-ments across the globe.

It is their love for thenation coupled with the edu-cation that influenced themand kindled in their hearts toawaken the people of ourcountry to come together toend the colonial rule. Let uspay our tribute to them.

Nelson Mandela hadaptly said: “Education is themost powerful weapon whichyou can use to change theworld.” Children are ourfuture and it is their right tolive with dignity and respectand be moulded as responsi-ble citizens. If they have noaccess to education, thefuture of our country will notbe bright.

More channels and more news-paper reaching out to diverse cus-tomer base, makes it harder forbrand managers to reach a truly massaudience. Simply stated, above theline (ATL) marketing that utilisesgeneric messages to build awarenessis no longer the best way to influencecustomer behaviour. BTL marketingallows the managers to customisetheir messaging in a more person-alised manner to the audience that abrand is targeting and are highlymeasurable, giving marketers valu-able insights into return on invest-ment of each campaign. Theseinsights in turn help in more robustcampaign for next crucial offer point."How has BTL changed?

The last five years has been excit-ing. Technology, Internet, social/digi-tal media and smart devises haveconnected people like never beforeon the other hand it has provided themarketer with actionable insights.Any BTL (advertising) campaign hasbeen all about speed-to-market withthe right message at the right timethrough the right channel whilemaintaining brand consistency andbeing non-intrusive."How is this impacting the marketand hiring trends?

As this segment is getting consol-idated and organised, the linebetween traditional ATL and BTLhas started blurring; marketers havestarted looking for a more robustmarketing mix, one which will inter-act with consumers in unbelievableways at various touch points. On thehiring front agencies are looking forfreshness of ideas more than the Ivyleague degrees. "Why is BTL a better return onmarketing investment?

The shift from ATL to BTLspending is in part the result ofchanging consumer attitudes. At thesame time, technology allows mar-keters to better target consumers.BTL initiatives are more successfulbecause they stress targeted and cus-tomer-centric communications andcreates measurable results and returnon investment metrics, which are

important to marketers under grow-ing pressure to prove the value oftheir campaigns."Are there specific sectors whichwill benefit from BTL?

An increasing number of brandshave begun to engage masses at one-on-one conversation and are relyingon BTL medium for effective market-ing. While all sectors, industries andverticals stand to benefit from BTLthe current trend of spent on BTLvaries depending on the industry, theproduct life cycle and the branditself. Sectors like IT, consumerdurables, auto, education, healthcareservices retail, food & beverages andeven mass entertainment like TVshows and movies are using BTL."What is the mportance of an emo-tional connect with customers?

Sophisticated consumers withaccess to information available ontheir smart devices, demand relevantmessaging. Brands that interact withconsumers at various touch pointsand creates connections in their per-sonal world tend to gain as they cre-ate experiences that are personallyunique but relevant to the consumer,it is memorable for them and invokeemotion. This emotional connectchanges a target group consumer toan influencer.
