Moderated Usability Tests
user experience design & strategy
Our 5-Step Process for Planning & Conducting
June UX specializes in UX design & usability testing.
We’ve conducted over 300 usability tests on paper, prototypes, websites & apps.On average, we uncover 113 issues per usability study.
This is the 5-step process we use to plan & conduct moderated usability studies.
step 1 Discovery
First, we lay the groundwork.
We learn about the objectives of your usability study…
What you specifically want to learn.
Who you want to test your site or software.
We use this information to write a detailed usability test plan.
step 2 Recruiting &
Scheduling
Next, we find the right people for your study.
We believe the recruiting process makes or breaks the quality of a usability study.
We use a rigorous approach to find participants who truly represent your users.
And we weed out those who aren’t a good match.
We find high-quality participants using a number of methods.
• Your email database• Your website (via an
intercept tool)• Your social media
accounts• Research panel
We also use many creative methodsto recruit hard-to-find participants.
step 3 Script
Development
Next, we set up the test in a way that ensures we collectgood data.
A comprehensive discussion guide ensures each session is conducted in a consistent manner.
In a 60-minute session, a test participant might complete 2 to 7 tasks.
Or, we might create tasks with the participant rather than give pre-defined tasks.
step 4 Facilitation
We can conduct a usability study anywhere…
…at a formal research facility, a conference room at your office, or even the participant’s kitchen table.
It’s showtime!
As an observer, you will be able to watch and listen to the sessions in real-time.
We use a detaileddiscussion guide to facilitate sessions, but a test can go in any direction.
Some participants will only complete one task. Others will rush through with time to spare.
We plan for that.
Once a task is given to a participant, we try to remain mute.
We find this gives us better, truer insights into the user flow & experience.
After each task, we ask follow-up questions & explore trouble spots more deeply.
At the end of each session, your team will have a chance to submit additional questions.
In between test sessions, we lead recap sessions with you & your team.
Recap sessions are critical to the success of a usability study. You will see things no one else sees.
By the fifth test session, the biggest usability issues will be absolutely clear…
But we recommend a minimum of 8-10 sessions to uncover the majority of usability issues.
step 5 Analysis &
Findings
After the usability study, we analyze the findings & then present the major themes to you.
We know presentation decks will be shared with teams who were not involved in the usability study.
Our usability reports are designed to be immediately actionable & shareable.
