Art MarketingActively Promoting Your Art Through Social Media

Make Sure You Reach The Right Audience-

It’s Not Enough To Simply

Produce Art

You Need to Promote It too

You have an inherent need to create and leave your mark on the world

Making sure you reach the right audience, especially potential buyers, is crucial to your success

Decide What To Achieve-

Promote Accordingly:

Try building a reputation and a collector base

If you are just starting out….

Do you want to move on to international?

Do you want to make a mark in your community based on your

medium?

Do you want to develop the interest felt by people to your

particular theme?

Consistency-

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced

one kick 10,000 times.” Bruce Lee

Instead of exploring lots of styles and not mastering anything, start by focusing on one style and mastering it to the absolute limits of

your ability

Primary Areas Of Consistency-

Subject Matter

Image Quality

Presentation

Message

Don’t mix abstracts, figurative work, and landscapes in the same show

All created Images should have a similar process and have a cohesive look and feel

Consistent framing or canvas mounting style for paintings

Letterhead, business cards, flyers, emails, newsletters, social media and your website should

all communicate the same message

Guidelines For Portfolio Development-

General Rules For Portfolio Development:

Well executed Succinct Strong bio

It’s the visual that counts, along with Images, include captivating text

Size, media, and title should be included, and a brief description of the work

Share your background, how your art developed, what inspires you the most, and what you can give to the world

The Power Of The Internet-

Today, people are selling more work on social

media

Without leaving home or seeing

the buyers

Focus on 1-2 of these sites

when you’re getting started

Facebook Twitter

Instagram

Pinterest Google+

Choosing Social Media Sites-

When picking social media

platforms where you’ll be promoting your

work….

Consider Three

Things:

Audience (who is using the site?)

Behavior (Does it allow audience interaction)

Content (What content is typically shared?)

Compiled by author from source: agora-gallery.com

Audience-

Just as every artist has their own style,

their works also attract different

audiences

Some may use Instagram, others may use Pinterest

Who uses the social media you want to use; know your market

Not sure? – Show your work in public places and note peoples reaction

Content-

Whatever platform you choose, it should be one where it is common to share artwork

If you are the first person to start selling art in a new marketplace, you do have the element of originality, but how many

collectors will be there to see it?

Be sure that this is a place where collectors are actively looking to find art

Using Pinterest To Promote-

Have you ever used corkboards to visually keep track of ideas?

Pinterest has taken that concept and applied it online

It has over 10 million unique visitors per

month

It allows people to share images found online with ease, connecting users from around the

world

Pinterest has become an important tool for artists and galleries because it revolves

around images

It also has established itself as a major resource for professionals and DIY interior

designers

Pinterest-

Pros:

Group boards encourage more pins

Members of group boards automatically see all pins

Followers of one member will be more likely to follow other members

Cons:

You can’t control what others pin

You must share the spotlight

The more contributors who join the group board, the less your own pins will be seen

Promote On Instagram-

Artists now use Instagram to show their process because it focuses on

sharing images

Vogue reports artists regularly sell their

paintings straight from their feed

Cons:

Direct links to a website only work in your bio, not in a post’s caption

Only works on mobile, not on a computer

Creating Facebook Page-

Log in to Facebook, using your personal account

On the top right hand side of the page, from the drop-down

selections click on ‘Create Page.’

You’ll then be taken to a page that asks this information:

Local business or place

Company, organization or institution

Brand or product

Artist, band or public figure (choose this option)

Entertainment

Cause or community

4 Phases Of Art Marketing-

The 4 phases of the art marketing

model are:

1. The Attraction

Phase

2. The WOW Phase
