Compactainer® Roll Containers Enabling Total
Supply Chain Optimization for Jan Linders
Jan Linders. Al 50 jaar het voordeel van het zuiden.
Jan Linders is a Dutch, family-owned retailer operating in the
southeast region of the Netherlands. Jan Linders offers
friendly service, fresh local products and low prices for its
customers. In 2013, Jan Linders is celebrating its 50th
anniversary and is operating with 56 supermarket-sized
stores.
Jan Linders Supply Chain is highly developed and centrally
organized. Company operates with one main Distribution
Centre, carrying ca. 15.000 SKUs. DC operates within five
different temperatures, and has high automation level
(extended pallet racks, automated warehouse system, voice-
picking, etc.).
Most of the store orders are automatically generated, and
store deliveries are consolidated to multi-temperature trucks
enabling efficient store operations. Jan Linders uses mainly
wheeled Returnable Goods Carriers to deliver and support
their in-store operations.
Extensive Supply Chain Development 2006-2008
In early 2000s, Jan Linders had identified bottlenecks in their Supply Chain. Main challenges
were to increase logistics capacity and cost efficiency, similarly providing better service
level to the stores and shoppers. To fulfill these challenging goals, company made a
decision to invest in the whole Supply Chain - stores, DCs and transportation. Main driver for
the overall development was to turn logistics to serve stores in an optimal way.
During 2006-2008 Jan Linders executed an extensive project, key areas being the ramp-up of
a new highly automated Distribution Centre, implementation of a new store ordering
process & system and a start operating with a new goods carrier fleet.
During the development project Jan Linders identified that nestable roll cages would be the
optimal goods carriers in their new Supply Chain setup. As part of the development project,
company decided to roll-out Compactainer® roll cages supplied by K. Hartwall.

Compactainers® in Jan Linders Supply Chain
Each year more than 800.000 Compactainers® are delivered to Jan Linders’ stores,
covering 95% of the total delivery volume. Compactainers® are used every day
within all the key product categories (non-food, ambient, fresh and frozen
goods), handled both by automated and manual processes. Nowadays Jan
Linders operates with ca. 13.000 Compactainers®.
Compactainers® are one of the key elements in Jan Linders’ store-friendly
deliveries approach. The main business benefit has been the increase of in-store
operational efficiency - goods are quickly replenished from truck delivery to shelf.
Another significant benefit has been the increased cubic efficiency in the whole
logistics flow. Similarly, this approach has enabled Jan Linders to fulfill the key
customer promise of freshness & service quality every day.
Jan Linders has a well-organized and thorough approach for managing the
Compactainer® operation, successfully optimizing the Total Cost of Ownership
(TCO) of the carriers. Company has put a lot of focus on correct handling of the
Compactainers® with trainings and instructions, and has also organized the repair
& maintenance operation of the units in a rational way. This has resulted to the
great operational performance - only 0,6% of total delivered Compactainer®
units are repaired during a calendar year. Not to mention that Jan Linders has in
operation large number of Compactainers®, which are over 10 years old and are
in an excellent shape.
