Context

With Women’s Day round the corner, it was only apt to conduct a Hackathon exclusively for women. Here are some startling facts, sourced from IDC, to back this initiative.

• Women constitute only 20% of all programmers in the world.• Among the 5 million developers in India, only 18% are women• Among all the programmers, 37% are in SEA, with a majority of them in India

These are just few of the statistics which prompted HackerEarth to devise a 3 day long Hackathon, for women exclusively.

Problem Statement & Target to be AchievedThe intent was to reach out to women

programmers and programming enthusiasts

and ask them to build solutions centred on

specific themes which include productivity,

social welfare, fun/gamification, and

multi-channel retail.

The target was to get 4000 registrations while

ensuring the budget wasn’t crossed.

ApproachThe approach to publicising the event, International

Women’s Day Hackathon included selection of

platforms and allocation of budget. The platforms

we used were Facebook, Twitter and Google

Adwords.

ExecutionOur primary step in execution included generating

interest lists for Facebook targeting. Then, we

carried out a lot of research with respect to the

placement of the Google Display Ads. Then,

creatives for Ads and organic posts were created.

We also conducted activities on Twitter such as

reaching out to influencers and carrying out hashtag

targeted campaigns.

ResultsIn terms of the number of registrations, we

exceeded the target by 82%, clocking in a total of

7314 registrations which is 3314 more than the

target of 4000 registrations. The participating

women came from 100 countries. Also, the

International Women’s Day Hackathon was featured

in Business Standard and Times of India, apart from

creating a world record. Also, many of the

influencers responded and replied to the tweets. All

this, we managed within the budget!

Conclusion

If the right channels are created, a lot of women

coding talent can be brought to the fore. All that is

required for the hidden talent to emerge is a bit of

a push from the right sides. This is just what the

International Women’s Day Hackathon did to the

large number of women coding talent spread all

over the globe – pushed these talented women

toward realizing the potential of their talent and

rewarding them for applying their coding skills to

build utilitarian solutions.
