Pre-Existing Products and results from primary research

The digi-pak that was best received by both primary and secondary audiences was The 1975 self titled album and a combination of The Blinding EP/Sequel to the prequel booklet by The Babyshambles. From analysing all three of these products I can see that the audience like a combination of simplmlic and personal design such as personal photographs with simple graphic design.

Colour scheme The colour schemes that audiences associated the indie genre with

were neutral tones (blues, greesn, browns, creams) and monochrome I research further in this through social networking site Pinterest.

I thought that greyscale would work well as it is in the middle of black and white, I also feel that the indie genre being dominated by males it should have male orniated colours such as greens and blues. Below is a screenshot from my pinterest board which we can refer back to later for audience research into colour schemes. I will conduct research into the colour scheme later on in our planning process using paint tester strips from DIY stores.

Colour Scheme The colour scheme that stood out for me was light blue,

purpleand grey. (As shown below) I felt this was a good choice of colour as the colours worked well together yet represented the male domination within the music industry through the blues, but the song we chose to do has a female vocalist so I though a dark purple would appeal to both females and male audience members creating a balance within genders for our design.

Main Image I found the photobooth images of Hannah Snowdon very inspiring as it was different

in terms of composition of the subject yet vintage through the sepia effect as an overlay, this overlay effect reminded me of The Smiths Discography- the contrast also linking to the monochrome style seen in today’s indie band’s identity. When researching I also found an image of hands on a man, which I feel could link with the song as the lyrics reference to hands a lot, visually representing to the audience a relation between the design of digi-pak and the songs featured.

I found this concealed composition of the subject interesting as it links with the song we have chosen to do by uncovering something hidden, The images hiding parts of the subject also making the audience ingruided to what the subject is hiding. I also liked how her tattoos were on show to the viewer and by having tattoos on show I feel it links with our target audiences as tattoos are becoming part of the indie culture.

I feel I could recreate this image by setting up a photo shoot and creating a contact sheet to chose our best image that will represent the artist.

Main Image Taking inspiration from The Blinding EP from The

Babyshambles and combining it with my idea of the vintage photobooth shoot I started to form a vague idea of the layout for the main image.

Photographs For the photographs audiences responded best to vintage Polaroids of the

band in monochrome. Relating to the audiences other hobbies such as music, books, travelling and art, I feel that an artistic aspect should be included to create a sense of brand identity making the product more recognisable. Below is a moodboard of possible image that I could incorporate into the design.

Typography Using typography website “Font space”

I researched into text styles I could use for my idea, looking to handwriting, simple and typewriter designs. By having a certain typography it can help the brand identity of the artist such as CHVRCHES made their band made into a symbol by changing the “E” into three lines making it more recognisable to audiences.

Overall design For the overall design I experimented with printing

processes in my fine art class to create aspects that could be included in the design such as collage prints, combining them with the ideas from the other slides to create the digi-pak design. (The printing process can be seen as below)

Brand Identity To indentify the artist I have laid out the digipak using a set

colour scheme, typography and style that will be used throughout the products so that the audience create a link between the products and the artist. From the audience response from the interviews thy liked how artist nowadays have an artistic influence on their work, from this I have experimented with art processes such as printing that can be adapting into the deign as well as rough brush marks to represent the rawness within the indie genre.

Later on in the planning process I will also adapt the band’s name into a symbol so that it can be recognised more by audiences making it visual to the viewer and stand out from other products.

Evaluation From the research I have conducted into the digipak it has showed me

that design is an important aspect and all the elements within the design must fit together to create a high quality product such as the typography and colour scheme; if the colour scheme was pink and the typography was gothic it won’t link creating an inaccture representation of the rock genre confusing audiences by not meeting their expectations. I will need to think carefully about the overall design and what it represents to audiences to fulfil their wants and needs of the product. Research into the product it important and I will also conduct audience research about he design to see what the audience response best to.
