YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE?BY SAM MULLER

TARGET AUDIENCE

• We have established that our main target audience is around 15-30 and we have shaped our film in such a way as to appeal to this target audience.

TYPES OF SCENES

• The fast pace nature of our thriller can be seen in the opening sequence as it almost instantly gets straight into the main plot. This means that it will typically attract a male audience as the rest of the film will include fast-paced action sequences.

• However, our thriller also needed to have a mysterious aspect to it to intrigue people so that it could also appeal to women who are less likely to enjoy the violence of it. Therefore the film isn’t all action sequences and will include scenes that build tension such as throughout the opening sequence.

• Although it is still most likely that the film will appeal more to the male gender as the violent scenes may put some women off.

MISE-EN-SCÈNE• The main location we used for our opening sequence was a park which will appeal to our target audience as it

creates tension in a familiar setting due to a park being a place that many people have been to before, particularly as children, where the dead body ruins the childlike innocence and causes a creepy atmosphere.

• The clothes worn by the antagonist (Sean Finch) are very regular, as are the clothes worn by the victim and so the audience can relate to these characters which means that the film will appeal to them more as the film will seem more realistic and therefore more thrilling. The costume worn by the protagonist (Sebastian Giles), although never shown fully in the opening sequence due to the close camera shots, would later be revealed in the film and would be much smarter than Sean’s clothes, symbolising his wealth and power over Sean and creating a separation where the audience would have even more of a reason to root for Sean and so would draw them into the film further. However, in the opening sequence, Sebastian can be seen to be wearing black leather gloves which hide his hands, creating mystery and tension as the audience don’t know who he is.

• Sebastian has a newer, more expensive Samsung phone, again signifying his wealth and that he understands all the latest technology, while Sean has to use a much older, much cheaper Nokia phone he found on the dead body which connotes that Sebastian thinks that he is above him and also has control over him, again creating tension. Another prop is the laptop which also suggests Sebastian’s involvement with current technology.

CHARACTERS

• The main character and protagonist, Sean Finch, is around the same age as the top half of our target audience which means that our film will appeal to them as they can partially identify with him.

• In addition, as the types of scenes in our film are more likely to appeal to the male gender, the actor playing Sean Finch is helpful as he may attract a feminine audience, especially considering that he resembles actor Jason Statham who has a fair amount of sex appeal. However, this can again attract a male audience as Jason Statham has appeared in many thriller films with similar target audiences, such as Crank and Killer Elite.

• Sebastian Giles, the antagonist, will also appeal to our target audience as he creates a lot of mystery and suspense and will cause much anticipation from the audience to find out his motivations and his identity and so they will want to watch the film.
