Government Advertising Tax 1700

By the 1700's, taxes were being imposed upon advertisements

by the government

Between 25-75% of the content of papers in London were

composed of ads

Taxes didn’t keep interests from making ads, they

became increasingly popular in newspapers

The First Magazine 1731

In 1731, the first magazine, The Gentleman’s Magazine, was published in London

Several years later, the first paid advertisement appeared in a French newspaper

During this time the telegraph was used for mass unsolicited message delivery (somewhat like spam)

Notable Events of 1776

Adam Smith published “An Inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations,” which promoted the idea that specialization was central to economic success

Brand owners were already good at making stuff and encouraging new streams of demand

Agencies were good at finding brand stories and fertile audiences to capture that demand

“Old media” created stories that educate and entertain, “new media” perfected new forms of distribution and discovery

1841- Volney B. Palmer opens the 1st

American Ad Agency in Philadelphia

1873 The first convention of advertising agents is held in New York

Billboard Advertising 1867

1867 Earliest Recorded Billboard Leasing occurs

By 1870 nearly 300 small sign-painting and bill posting companies were in operation

In 1891 the Associated Bill Posters’ Association of the US and Canada was formed in Chicago, now known as (OAAA) The Outdoor Advertising Association of America 

Incidentally, the first billboards did not stand up when exposed to the elements for a prolonged period of time

George Wilkes 1817-1875

The first to use sex to sell products, Wilks advertised beside girlie pictures

Founded 1845

The Gazette was marketed as a trade magazine for law enforcement, but featured photographs of scantily-clad actresses, strippers and prostitutes
