This week our #DearTanya feature is replaced by a Google announcement which I thought was significant so Idecided to post it instead.

Jade Wang from the Google My Business Maps team announced in the Google Business Help forums that ifbusiness owners do not login to their Google My Business account and do not respond to requests from Google,Google may unverify those accounts.

What does this mean?

So make sure you login to Google My Business frequently enough (Google recommends every 6 months) to preventyour verified Google business listing from being removed. According to the most recent statistical data released byGoogle, local searches will become more important for Search Engine Optimisation in 2016.

Why is Google doing this?

Here is what Google said about the new verification process:

Staying on top of your online presence can mean the difference between business as usual and newcustomers at your door. In fact, a recent study showed that consumers are nearly twice as likely tofind a business reputable if it has more information on Google, such as opening hours and photos. But when companies don’t keep their online information up to date, it can create an unpleasantexperience for people searching the web for information — like if a customer arrives at a localbusiness only to find that the address or operating hours have changed.
