What kind of media institution might distribute your magazine and why?

Due to our magazine being new to the market, we should research in detail which types of distributor would be ideal for our target market. Also, we would want the distributor to be able to portray our magazine as positive and make it appear appealing to our target audience. The two distributors I am going to display in this PowerPoint are IPC media and Bauer as they are two main popular distributors.

Bauer Pros: Bauer media group manages over 600 magazines, more than 400 media products and 50 radio stations. The company is European based meaning our magazine could be projected to a wider audience. Bauer media group also operates in 17 countries meaning it distributes successfully and is a popular distributor.

Bauer media group distribute ‘Kerrang’, a rock based magazine which could potentially have a similar social group / audience to our magazine. This means that we would have confidence in the company to be aiming our magazine at the correct target audience.

Also, the fact that Bauer manage both TV and radio stations means that our magazine could get more attention than it could from a different company.

Cons: The only con that I could identify with this company is that they may lack experience when distributing specifically an indie rock magazine as they only distribute one other magazine similar to our genre.

IPC Media Pros: IPC media sell over 350 million magazines each year and produce 60 media brands. This automatically shows us that they are capable of of distributing confidently which is something we would want for our music magazine.

When distributing magazines, the company is capable of catching the eye of two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men. This is a useful statistic when taking into account our magazine due to the fact our audience is both genders.

Brands that the company distribute are ones such as ‘Country Life’ and ‘NME’. When creating our magazine, NME was a strong influence whilst we were both testing and designing different parts of our magazine. Due to NME’s success when it comes to popularity this gives us confidence that IPC media could distribute our indie rock magazine well.

Cons: IPC media also distribute magazines such as ‘Country Life’ and ‘What's On TV’ could suggest that they aren't as experienced when is comes to distributing music magazines specifically.

ConclusionAfter analyzing both the advantages and disadvantages of each company, I believe that Bauer Media Group would be most suited to distribute our music magazine. This is because they appear to have more experience due to the fact they work with TV, radio stations and media products. Also, the fact they are in different countries also means that our magazine could reach a much wider audience.

Although IPC Media has distributed successful magazines like NME , I personally feel more confidence in Bauer Media Group to distribute our magazine as I feel that IPC may lack some experience when it comes to distribution and when comparing both companies figures and statistics.
