Winter Skin Survival – 7 Natural Skin Care Secrets to Transform Your DryWinter SkinBaby, it’s cold outside!

There’s no mistaking that (in most parts of the northern hemisphere) Old ManWinter has reared his ugly head.

And though there are many magical things about this time year that I love –the havoc wreaked upon my skin is certainly not one of them. Seeminglyovernight and despite the use of incredible natural skin care products ,even the supplest skin can become as dry as the last golden leaves fallingfrom the barren trees. So annoying ….

The good news is that with a few simple tweaks to your skin care regimenand lifestyle, you can quickly regain your radiant glow well through theholidays and beyond.

Here are my 7 natural skin care secrets to help your skin survive the PolarVortex:

Bring on the Oil

Dry winter skin needs a whole lot more TLC than its warmer weathercounterpart. So this is the time to pull out the heavy artillery. Switch out your lighter cleansers and moisturizers withthose high in emollients and oils … yes, I DID say oils …

Please be mindful, however to avoid petroleum based products and those containing mineral oil – which is apetroleum by product. Both are highly comedogenic (pore blocking) and according to some may also be a healthrisk.

Instead, look for products containing healthy beauty oils such as shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, emu oil and hemp. All of these ingredients are easily absorbed into the skin and will not cause breakouts. These are some of myfavorites:

Hemp, Hemp Hooray Daily Moisturizer

Essona Organics Miracle Serum

Pure Emu Oil

Incorporate Moisturizing Mists

One of the simplest and most effective secrets for warding off dry winter skin is to incorporate a moisturizing mist intoyour beauty arsenal.

Though it may seem counter-intuitive, the best method for locking moisture into the skin is to apply your serums, lotions and oils to slightly damp skin. Misting your skin before application will actually help the ingredients in yourlotions and serums penetrate better for maximum effectiveness – and your dry winter skin will love you for it!

Misting sprays are also great for setting your makeup and to keep your skin well hydrated when flying.

Here are some great options:

Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist

John Masters Organics Rose and Aloe Mist

NaPCA Moisture Mist

Exfoliate Frequently

The cold harsh weather of winter and the subsequent dehydration of our skin require a consistent practice ofexfoliation that will remove the dead skin cells and promote absorption of the nutrients applied. This is a critical stepto ensure that our skin remains properly hydrated.

There are numerous methods of exfoliation available – from scrubs to (non-chemical) peels to personalmicrodermabrasion. I like to use a combination of all them for a total of 3 times a week. Here are my favorites:

Essona Organics Juicy Peel

Dr. Alkaitis Enzyme Exfoliating Mask

Microderm MD

Try a DIY Hydrating Mask

When time and resources permit, there is no better way to nourish your dry winter skin than to treat it to a hydratingmask. And in my opinion, some of the effective hydrating facial treatments can be made in the comfort of your ownkitchen. What better way to control the quality of ingredients than to get them from Mother Nature herself? Here aresome of my ‘go to’ DIY hydrating masques that I think you’ll love:

Hydrating Facial Mask

Salt Honey Mask

Skin Soothing Mask

Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

Even the dreariest of winter days require the need for UV protection. Though many people believe that sunscreen isnot necessary all year round, the sun’s damaging UV rays do not take a hiatus during the winter months. As such, weall need to protect our skin from their potential consequences – wrinkles, dark spots and even cancer.

To protect your skin in the healthiest way, use an all-natural mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide and/or titaniumdioxide. In my opinion there is one product that stands out like a beacon among its competition. John MastersNatural Mineral Sunscreen is the ‘end all, be all’ of sunscreens. Not only does it give superior protection – it also

contains shea butter and olive oil, so it is nourishing as well. I’m completely obsessed with this product and I wear itevery day, all year long.

Watch Your Water Consumption

People have a tendency to drink less water in the cold winter months. I have to admit – the thought of downing aglass of cold water is much less appealing than a piping hot latte, cider or cocoa.

Yet even in the polar vortex, it is critical for the health of your skin (and body) to consume adequate amounts ofwater. No matter how much cream we slather on, our skin will suffer enormously if our bodies are dehydrated. Andwith the lack of humidity in the air during the colder months and the harshness of our central heating systems, it’s justas easy to get dehydrated as it is in extreme heat.

Please keep in mind that the type of water consumed is equally (if not more) important than the amount consumed.Filtered, mineralized water is the best choice – the more alkaline the better, as acidic water is not well absorbed bythe body and can exacerbate dehydration.

Humidify Your Space

Investing in a good humidifier will be one of your very best defenses against dry winter skin. When the air within yourhome lacks humidity, any moisture on your skin evaporates – often rendering topical treatments futile. By infusing theair in your home with moisture, a humidifier will be your skin’s best friend by allowing the serums and cream tomaximize their benefits.

Final Thoughts

Just because the weather has turned frightful – that doesn’t mean your skin has to be a winter nightmare. Bytweaking your skin care routine a bit, you can transform your dry winter skin and restore your radiant glow.
