Of Bunga Telur and Bally Shoes is about a young man, Jamal who was getting married. However, he had no savings. So he had to raise money for the wedding expenses. He had to think of all possible ways to do so, including selling his personal possession . During the preparation for his wedding he found out that wedding custom must be followed.
In this story, all the key events are woven into a pattern. It comprises the following :-
ExpositionJamal decides to get married. A bride is chosen for him.
Rising ActionJamal finds that he lacks funds for the wedding. He thinks of ways to reduce expenses.
ClimaxJamal suggests using Hacks sweets instead of 'bunga telur'. His traditional sisterthreatens to call off the wedding.
Falling actionHe sells his Bally shoes to his cousin, Cousin Lan.
ResolutionAt the dress rehearsal, Jamal discovers that he has no good shoes for his wedding!
1. The story is set in an unnamed village in Kelantan. Most of the events take place at Jamal ‘s house and the community he lives in.
2. Other events take place at the bank, a tailor ‘s shop in Kota Bharu, cousin Lan ‘s house and Hajah Cik Minah ‘s Songket House in Panambang.
3. The story is set in modern times in a span of about three to four months.
1. Jamal > obedient, practical, not very traditional-bound and not financially stable.
2. Jamal ‘s mother > old-fashioned, domineering, traditional, respected, caring, practical and kind-hearted.
3. Jamal ‘s sister > traditional-bound, practical, well-organised, bossy but caring and kind.
4. Cousin Lan > brand-conscious, vain and likes wearing clothes with designer labels.
The main theme of the story is marriage and
cultural customs. The sub-themes include traditional and culture versus modern values, materialism and family ties,
The moral values found in the story include to respect and values customs and value customs and traditional, respect for elders, obedience to our parents and the importance of planning ahead.
The story is written from a third person point of view.
In the story, the tone and mood are mainly humorous, especially when the writer describe the character thoughts and actions.
1. The writer uses symbolism to emphasise the importance of customs and traditions. This is especially apparent of the bunga telur, a symbol of traditional Malay wedding. The Bally shoes and the branded items mentioned are symbolic of new values and modernism seeping into the traditional Malay society.
