History of Female Pipe Smokers

Pipes made out clay were a hot

commodity throughout the

17th and 18 centuries.

Women, regardless of social status smoked in public and private.

The pipes were called “the

Indian Weed”, which was smoked for recreational

and medicinal purposes.

By 1850, smoking was considered

socially unacceptable for wealthy

women.

However, many women

still continued to smoke privately.

By 1920, tobacco

companies began

aggressively targeting women.

Tobacco Pipes And Cultural Wars

Between the 20s and 60s,

Western cultures began to place more

gender restrictions on

women.

Cigarettes were

considered fashionable

while tobaccos were vulgar.

These ‘culture wars’ shifted again in the

60s, going back to society’s

acceptance of women

smoking pipes.

However, this trend did not catch on in America.

Women Pipe Smokers Today

Female pipe smokers

remain more socially

acceptable in Europe than

America.

However, more women

than ever are buying tobacco pipes for sale

.
